Goodyear Duratracs

Planning for a road trip mid-year. Will travel several thousand miles. Most likely some snow, ice, rain and will be pulling about a 1200lb camper.

Are Duratracs the way to go?

Hear good things on Copper AT, but aren't rated for as many miles. Not to mention I've found a good deal on Duratracs.

Lots of threads on them in the tire subforum, literally hundreds of pages. Bottom line, they're highly regarded.

I had them on my FJ Cruiser and loved them on roads with compact snow and ice. No issues on wet roads at all. The only reason I went with BFG AT KO2's on my Taco was to compare the two.

 

That's one opinion. And you'll possibly find more like it if you read some of the threads.

You'll also find many more like mine, that will tell you it's the best street-performing AT tire that I've ever owned. There's a reason they're so popular.

You really need to do a lot more research on it, and rather than base your decision on one opinion, come to your own conclusion.

 

I think they are just fine for the street. Mine lasted for almost 60,000 miles, 95% of that was on the street. They have excellent road manners for such an aggressive looking A/T tire.

Found a good price on them and have had good luck with Goodyear in the past and heard these last a good amount of time. However, i have never bought any tires with that kind of tread.

I've got duratracs and I like them. Look great and haven't had any issues.

 

What price did you find and where? What size are you looking at?

 

I don't have the exact quote, but it was at sams club on 265 65 17s. Getting 80$ off a set helps with the price. Found cheaper comparable tires but with lesser ratings.

My Duratracs have about 20k on them and they've been great on and off road. Some folks complain about their wet/rain performance, but they've never given me a problem. They're very stable on dry, wet, and snow covered roads.

 

My current ride has 265/75/r16 load rance C Duratracs. This is 4wd #17 in a long line of trucks I've owned. I've had all sorts of radials, bias plys, mud tires, A/T's, etc....

The Duratracs are about as good as any tires I've ever owned. They ride great, wear as good as any off road capable tire I know of, they LOOK great, and I'd buy 'em again if I had it to do all over again.

Not sure where I said one opinion would make up my mind (as earlier poster may have stated.)
The deal is if they aren't good on wet roads I probably don't need that. Whether they are or not will reveal itself after researching and utilizing the opinions of many fine TW members such as yourself, I will make an informed decision.

 

Yes, many threads. But, I loved mine in the snow. Never had a problem on the street. I only switched because they don't make the size I wanted after lifting.

They're also studable if you're worried about ice. But, that probably won't matter on a road trip, as they're only legal durring the winter months in most places that they aren't illegal.

Not trying to be argumentative by the way, just pointing out why I said that. As it's becoming clear, many of us love our Duratrac's in all conditions.

Sorry, man. Didn't realize it meant exactly that. Perhaps it means something different? If after researching it, and leaning on the opinions of other message board members, if they are found to be not great on the street...then I probably won't get them.

My Duratracs have been great offroad, on dry roads, on wet roads, in snow, and on compacted snow and ice. I have less than 15,000 miles on them so that has something to do with it but other than that I have no idea where the complaints come from. Maybe they get worse, like all tires, as they wear. Maybe some don't have them properly inflated. I did notice that they are sensitive to being properly inflated but honestly that's not unusual for any new tire. If the naysayers turn you off f Duratracs take a look at Goodyear's Duratrac equivalent sold only at Wal-Mart.
