The torqshift trans in the F-series is a great transmission, reliable past 700HP and 1K ft-lb of torque.

Most of the time I don't split on the low side. Unless taking off steep hill.

    Mostly stuff I built.
If it has a torque converter it has slip and builds heat. No way to avoid it that is just the nature of the beast. Even in converter lock up it is not a positive engagement it is still just a viscous clutch doing the work and a small one at that.

Manual transmission trucks in my stables:
1985 Toyota Hilux 1,237,941 miles (was an over sized load escort vehicle for 960,000 miles of its life.) has had 5 clutches through its life span still going strong.

1990 Chevrolet 1500 340k still on original clutch.

    1984 Chevrolet K30 560k 3rd engine second clutch.

2001 Dodge 3500 367k original clutch was replaced at 60k after engine upgrades (wasn't going to handle 700 brake HP) the South Bend clutch is still trouble free. Daily driven and regular heavy hauler.

I do all my own repairs and maintenance and can tell you for sure that a manual is much more cost effective in the long run.

I have beat my 2011 f350 work truck quite a bit, at 100,600 still works perfectly. My only domestic I buy.

Torque converter lockup is 100% direct drive, when the motor sees a regular constant load I believe

When the transmission is put under load the lock up converter is going disengage and then down shift if load continues to increase. Thus allowing converter slip and creating heat.

The military uses automatics so that any PFC can operate the equipment. I believe ease of use is what is sited in the instruction manuals.
