So I finally bought a 01 Tacoma after off-roading with my 98 4Runner for 50K miles. She is a double cab with 3.4 5VZ-FE engine. Swapping the supercharger and URD 7th injector and other stuff all went well.

    BUT

I noticed that the low fuel warning light won't come on, even when I ran the tank COMPLETELY dry. The gauge is accurate, shows full and empty and all between. I pull the cluster out and check the bulb, which is also functioning.

    SO,

Will changing the fuel sending unit repair my problem? what actully trigger the low fuel light to come on?

    Many APPRECIATION in advance....

i have the opposite problem... i can't get mine to turn off... at some point i had to replace the fuel pump which is in the tank.. anywho, my sensor keeps readin the tank as empty when it's full... i was advised by my mechanic that the tank has to be dropped in order to replace it, but i just don't feel like going through all that trouble right now...

could be just your sensor needs to be replaced...

seems that the low fuel warning light is wired separately from the leveling, or the float unit.........

Sounds like the sensor. The easiest fix is it to just keep enough fuel in it....then the light wouldn't come on even if it was working, and if you didn't know if it was working or not you wouldn't worry if it was working. Well... that kinda of gets us back to where we started now doesn't it? Sorry, i'm sure that didn't help you at all.

Im OCD about not letting the tank get anywhere near where the light would come on lol. I treat a 1/4 tank as if its pretty much empty. I know this dosent help ya OP...
