Dents and scratches, and other stuff.
That's what I installed on my '12, with back up camera. No problems so far. I live in northern Canada, so I put some graphite lubricant in the cylinder, to hopefully prevent freezing/sticking.

    Pop&Lock, that is.

If it is like in the next 15 minutes urgent, do the hose clamp mod. Also do the washer mod. Those two in combination will stop 96% of tailgate thieves. If you think it is still necessary, order a pop n lock.

I did the hose clamp mod. You could also just park your truck close enough to your house, tree, whatever, so it can't be opened until you get a fix.

Another Mod you could consider is instead of using the hose clamp, just remove the tail gate bracket cut a piece of 1-1/2" PVC pipe cut to size and place the sleeve over the pivot and then re mount the bracket. Very easy and cheap to complete. It works great if you don't plan on removing your tail gate for anything. I read about this a while back on TW not sure who to give credit to an awesome idea.

Thanks for all the responses ordered the pop n lock but just went to home depot and got a hose clamp to put on for at least the next to days. Still cant believe they stole the tailgate. We are sitting ducks are neighborhood street does not have a block wall separating us from the main street so any one can walk though, we have had are boat broken in to and other vandalism.
PVC pipe idea is great idea to never would of thought of that! to who ever said it above

    Cant trust anyone these days...

The tailgate security is indeed a pain, but I don't know why Toyota didn't make a factory lock on the 2nd gens. Domestic trucks from decades ago had tailgate locks...

you can also make the screw part of the hose clamp point down where you actually have to get under truck under the bumper to access it and its not just on top when you open the tailgate

For the same reason a Brand New $45,000 Tacoma doesn't have power seats. Toyota looks good, but technology wise is still behind. I mean I believe they finally have heated mirrors in the 2016's. Where as my 2015 Tacoma with a price tag of almost $35,000 didn't.

Pretty hard to carry two stolen tailgates at once. He's probably coming back for yours.

Toyota and Apple in cahoots?? They have the ability to provide all these small improvements, but choose to hold back! :annoyed:
