I currently have a discover card, pretty happy with it but everything can always be improved so I'm looking around.
Most of my expenditures are firearms parts, fuel, and Amazon products, the amazon card is very tempting but I'm not sure about it yet.

I'm looking for a card that has better fuel rewards (Discover does the rotating quarter @5% and it just doesn't seem like the best option for me) and hopefully some Amazon bonus as well.
I don't want a yearly fee for the card and I always pay it off at the end of the month.
Credit report is good (High 700's) and the only thing keeping it down is I only have the one card (Had it for about a year and a half).

    Thoughts?

"BankAmericard Cash Rewards Signature Visa" thru BofA is a card I use strictly for gas & groceries and nothing else. 3% cashback on gas and 2% cashback on groceries and the bank offers bonuses if you redeem the cashback into a BofA account.

No rotations and no fees but they do cap the rewards to $1500 per quarter in gas/groceries.

What he said about that particular BOA card. ^

If you travel, particularly overseas, many places will not take Discover, and almost all will only take chipped cards. It's been that way for a number of years, and the US is just now getting to that. 3 years ago chipped US issued cards were quite hard to find, at least with a value proposition I was interested in.

I use a BOA travel rewards card, pays 1.5% on all purchases all the time, and that can be redeemed as a direct credit to your card balance for travel related purchases. It's a chipped card. Even better you pay no bank transaction fees when in foreign countries. And using a card in a foreign country will guarantee accurate exchange fees; no guessing if the clerk is using current data or not. May not sound like much but it can add up fast.

I've also found BOA to be very security responsive on this card as well. I recently made a couple of online purchaces in foreign countries (room, transportation) and they shut the card down, THEN called and emailed me simultaneously to verify it was me making the transactions. They immediately released the card when I answered the security questions. I actually appreciate that a lot.

I do have a Discover also, and will likely always keep it. It's my oldest card (good for credit score) and I do use the 5% specials they run for several things. And when redeeming those for gift cards, you usually get a 10% break.

If you go to money.com they usually have a section on best credit cards for specific uses.

For me, no annual fee is a must have, as well as online monitoring, auto payments, etc. I don't care about interest rate since I pay in full each month.

Be very careful with affinity cards. Some of them look good on the surface, but are really quite restrictive.

Go with a cash-back card you'll want to keep for a long time. Remember, your credit score takes into account the average age of all your cards. If you open up a second card, you cut your card age in half. This is why I didn't wait very long (6 months) to get another card. I had a secured card first. Now I have a card that I won't need to replace pretty much ever. And since "length of credit history" is such a big deal, it's probably for the best. Remember, only apply for more credit when you need it. If your score is that high then you should have no problem getting a good rate and a high limit and you'll be able to use the one card for a long time (such is my case). I'll have no problem staying below the 30% credit utilization ratio now. :D

Cash back cards IMO are the best just because you don't have to deal with proprietary "points" and "rewards" systems.

    Thanks for the info guys.

There's no BoA near me, should that affect my decision?

I rarely travel overseas, and when I do everything is taken care of, but I do plan on getting a chipped card as they are the standard for the future.

I'll check out money.com, thanks for the tip.

The Chase Freedom card doesn't look like a bad option, local branch is only 30 minutes away, and though they do the rotating rewards it seems to usually be common expenses.

Depends if you intend to open an account or just credit card. Credit cards are managed entirely online but if you don't already have an account then you wouldn't be able to receive additional cash back bonuses on top of the 3/2/1%.

i like my Quicksilver card from Capital1. 1.5% on everything and no cap on points. I use it as my only source of paying. I get around $70 a month free with it. I pay it off weekly so its not costing me anything.

I use a chase Freedom that does the rotating as well as the regular 2% on fuel I believe. I mostly use if for the rotating categories. The Discover I have is cool b/c you can stack the rotating categories as well as using the shop discover at the same time. I've gotten awesome deals on things like my fridge, washer and dryer that way. I also have an AMEX that does 3% on fuel and 2% on travel and restaurants. I have the Amazon store card that does constant 5% on everything on there and its great. I got I half way through this year and it saved me bunch, esp around Christmas time. I basically use them all at different points of the year to maximize the return I get from them. I'm just always make sure to never carry a balance since that would totally negate any cash back.

Are any of these cards available to use with diesel purchases at say Flying J/ Pilot? I spent 30.000 in fuel last year, if so this would be a considerable savings. I looked at BOA but couldn't find a list of approved merchants. Thanks in advance.

So question, Im looking at cards with 0% apr for x number of months that also offer some type of cash back. Is the citi double cash any good? I had a Barclay card through apple with 18 months 0% interest which was nice but the rewards are all for apple and iTunes and such which is not what I want. I mainly spend on food and gas but also want a credit card for strictly gun/truck stuff. This is why the 0%apr would be nice if I have to make a big purchase that I can pay off over a few months. I had a pretty good credit score but want to know if its worth it to close my Barclay and open another? If so which card?

    Thanks in advance

I was about to change my credit card company when a big box store made a pretty good offer. After I investigated the bank I decided not to change. Check the web for bank reviews before you act.

Things like how the bank handles fraudulent charges and how it treats its customers can be important.

capital one was on point for us overseas and here in the states. crazy fast with their fraud alerts. my wife and I treated her mom to a nice dinner in miami that was in the $150+ range and the minute it was swiped I received an email, human phone call, and text message all within seconds of each other asking me if it was legit.

It's not necessarily aimed at fuel rewards or anything, but I have a Citi Double Cash card and it's been awesome so far. You get 1% cash back for purchases and then another 1% cash back for payments. I pay my balance in full each month so this works out awesome, and there's no quarterly categories or anything, you basically just get 2% cash back for everything you buy. No yearly fee, and I called Citi and negotiated a super low interest rate. They've been good to me

Is that $30,000? Lot 'o fuel!

Approved merchants? It's a credit card. Usable where ever the merchant accepts credit cards. Pilot accepts CCs, so............

Just look at caps on the cards. The BOA that pays 3% on fuel caps at $1500/qtr.

You might do well to max that $1500 at 3%, then use an unrestricted cash back at 1.5%, augmented by a Discover paying 5% for specific qtrs, until you reach it's cap.

So for example, if your fuel spend is evenly spread $7500/qtr.

if it was a qtr in which Discover paid 5% w/% $1,500 cap you'd use that first for $75

Then the BOA Visa for 3% w/$1500 cap second, for $45

Then a card that pays 1.5% w/no limit for the remaining $4500 of fuel, for $67.50

    Total $187.50 for that qtr.

On non 5% Discover qtrs, you's have the BOA Visa for 3% w/$1500 cap first, for $45

Then a card that pays 1.5% w/no limit for the remaining $6000 of fuel, for $90

Total of $135 for that qtr.

Nothing to sneeze at, as long as you pay the card in full each month.
