Anyone regretting not waiting for a TRD OR?

I've got my TRD Sport 6MT w tech and tow in Inferno coming, although it wasn't with the interior that I wanted. Not a big deal because I'll most likely cover all the seats anyway (kids). Truth be told, I am not planning any serious off roading with this truck, but it will be used as a truck. That being said, I recently realized that I was initially wrong in assuming that the Sport was cheaper than the Off Road. And now I'm starting to think that maybe I made a wrong move. Considering resale value and everything else, what I want is the most truck for my money, and I'm starting to doubt that a TRD Sport was the right way to go. I told my salesman this and he started going on about how Toyota isn't building manual trucks, yada yada yada, that the OR is just better shocks and skids, and that he worked really hard to find me this unicorn of a TRD Sport with the color I wanted and all the bells. But the OR has more than just shocks and skids, it has the Clutch Start Cancel, the Active Traction Control, and the Locking Rear Diff. It's obviously a more capable truck for the same money. Am I doing the right thing here? I know I don't NEED a TRD OR, but if dollars and cents are all equal, why not? And as for looks, I could go either way, although I DO prefer the black front bumper on the OR and wish my Sport had that piece. Any thoughts?

I ordered an OR DCSB with a manual and there is no way I would've settled for the sport. I'm still waiting BTW, and if I had to, I'd wait 3 months longer to get the OR. I don't know about you but I'm 34 years old and never bought a new vehicle for myself, and I'll be damned if I spend that much money on a vehicle and not be totally satisfied with what I got.

I'd have ordered the OR just to avoid the fake hood scoop on the Sport.

I was planning on getting an OR anyways, but when I found out it was the same price as a Sport, it was a no brainer. With all that extra equipment in the OR (better suspension, locker, active traction control, and MTS and CC if auto trans) I have a hard time paying the same for less. Plus, I would think all that extra technology will only help resale values in 10 years. I could be way wrong, but it's just my gut instinct.

I'm 34 as well. Although not my first new vehicle, it's definitely the most expensive and likely to be the last "new" vehicle I buy for a long long time.

I actually prefer the scoop. Not for functionality of course, but because I like how it breaks up the hood. But it's definitely NOT why I chose this particular truck. And I'd prefer my premium money go toward function, over aesthetics.

Well function-wise, the OR is a better bet, not to mention the resale will be better years down the road. It all depends on what you want it for. I really beat the shit out of any piece of equipment I buy, including vehicles, so I want the most solid version I can buy. That would be the OR. Resale will also be better down the road.

I had called around to about 15 dealerships in 3 states looking for the right price on the right configuration. I wish I gave the TRD OR more thought and noticed that it was priced the same.

On a somewhat side note: I gotta say, this particular truck buying experience has been a lot different than I've been used to in the past. These Toyota dealerships act as though they could care less if you buy or walk. It's like pulling teeth just to get them to work with you on the truck you want. It's more along the lines of, "Oh, yes, that is a rare combination. The website says it's available in that configuration, but you're not going to find it, here is what we can put you in, take it or kick rocks" I keep reading on here about buyers being given build sheets? Do I have to insist on this to be given the option? 3 months of this bs has got me exhausted, and it only got me $300 over invoice for a truck that was "close enough".

When did you place your order? Was there initial push back from the dealer? What is your timeline?

I ordered on Nov. 30 and by December 16 I had a build date of January 26. They would not budge on MSRP and they're the only volume dealer close to me and also the only dealer who even seemed to take me seriously on making an order rather than taking something they already had in the pipeline.

I didn't have to wait called dealer told them what I wanted. He said man I'm not sure we can get that in a MT, I'll call you back give him a few days. Hour later he called said I got that truck 500 down and They would go get it. Few hours later it was mine.

I have the sport only because it was on the lot in the configuration and color I wanted. But i probably go wheeling more than most here with OR's, and a few guys here wheel more with their sr5's than people with OR's. Whatever the truck is, it'll work fine. But get the one you want man, don't ask us

Not sure why so many say that the Off Road has the better suspension, it depends on usage. The TRD Sport has better suspension, wheels and tires than the Off Road for on road driving, handling and towing. The Sport also has the clutch start cancel so if you're buying a manual, you're only giving up the rear locker and fancier traction control. I do wish that a rear locker was available in all trims and functioned in 2wd.

i ordered a DCSBTRDOR 6speed manual in early November in MGM. I still do not have a build date. I can easily find what I want in a different color or the Sport model but I refuse to buy it. all this money that im spending on a brand new truck I wont settle for anything less.

When Toyota introduced the 2016 Taco I wanted the 4x4 Sport. I currently have a 06 4x4 Sport and it has done me well. Howver, after really looking at all the 2016 configurations i started to feel exactly like you. For the money the 3rd gen OR provided a little more truck so I have decided to go with that come 2017. If you listed all of the options for both OR and Sport you will see the cost is not that much different. Go for the OR even if you dont do much off roading.

There has never been a time where I needed the locker.

That said, the only reason I have a sport is because the DCLB didn't come in an off road until now. If I bought a new one, that's what it would be.

I have made mistakes like this in the past where I felt like I wanted something but then settled for a bit less and ended up regretting it. So I waited for the OR to come in that I wanted. Man that wait sucked.

OR > Sport hands down. Don't settle. Wait and get the truck you want. I have never understood who would buy a Sport in the first place...all it brings to the table is the Fake hood skewp, color matched fender flares and not-so-great 17 wheels. I personally prefer no skewp, black fender flares and the OR 16 wheels. Add to that the locker, shocks, skids and clutch start cancel... I mean wtf? It's not even remotely close.

For me it was either SR or OR; the other trims don't make sense to me. I just don't care about a couple extra trim pieces and a little screen in my dash. I realized I've only wished I had a locker once in the past 4 years or so, so it was SR for me. Saved a ton of money, too!
