I'm 37. You don't remember gang wars in the 80's? Mafia was still strong and around. Hard Drugs really picked up in the 70's and 80's. But like I said, The information highway is bigger and faster now. News about everything travels fast. The most that has increased nowadays is terrorism. But that's a different subject and fight.

I do agree that the officer could of acted different. But I wasn't there either. Not all cops are great.

We agree on something, not all cops are great.

Let me ask you this: If you were a parent in the 80s, would you have felt it safer to let your teenager walk ten city blocks than you would today? If you answer that question with anything other than a "yes" then you and I should stop discussing this.

Going a bit OT I guess but we had some rough gang territory in Tacoma WA when I was a kid in the 80s (I'm 36)... I remember my mom worked at a hospital in downtown Tacoma and had to drive through the HillTop neighborhood to get home. The Tacoma PD advised the nurses on graveyard that they should only stop briefly at red lights in particular intersections in the Hilltop area. Google Hilltop Tacoma if you don't believe me.

There have been rough areas in every city in this country for decades. You think they're not still there and not growing ?

Hilltop area has cleaned up dramatically. In fact some of the homes there are now selling for big money. Crime ebbs and flows, over time, in various parts of every city.

I wouldn't disagree with that. But do you think overall, this country is more safe for citizen John Doe than it was in the 1980s ?

Probably depends where you live. Hard to generalize there. Check out this story from 1989 in the Hilltop area -- you don't see shit like this these days...well if you did the Soldiers would have been arrested too most likely: http://articles.latimes.com/1989-09-25/news/mn-179_1_drug-dealers

Isolated case isn't an indication of the overall safety of the country now compared to then. Go over to the 50's thread or the 60's thread and ask them. I bet the answer would almost be unanimous.

I'm a parent of 3 boys. 10yo, 3yo, 9months. And just like the 80's. Depends on where I live. Where I live now? Yep. My 10yo can walk to the park safely. Kids did get hurt, kidnapped, or beat up in the 80's. Everyone says "In my day, this shit didn't happen" as they get older. Nope. Wrong. It did. You just didn't pay attention, or didn't know.

And just like every profession. There's good and bad.
No doubt. Gangs were more organized back then too.

This will probably blow your mind. I don't own a gun. Not one. Nothing against them. Someday when I have the money, I'd like one to be able to mess around with. Just not a priority for me. I've managed to survive. I went to high school with many a gang members. Survived that too. :notsure:

I've never owned a gun in my life either. I am fortunate to be able to live in areas I feel relatively secure. But overall, this country is going downhill and fast. I served for 23 years in the military so I'm as patriotic as most people but when I retire, I will seriously consider moving overseas.

You lost me at overseas. I don't think there is a country safer. Specially right now. With terrorism at its highest. With Americans being hated as much as we are. The safest place right now is right here IMO. But that's me. I wish you luck in your endeavors.

Phhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht. Have you ever been to overseas countries ? I've been to 19 and even as an American living abroad, I feel it's MUCH safer in many of them. You and I will just not see eye to eye on this so I'll let you have the last word. It's all yours.
