Light wheels?

Well I decided to go up a size on my tires and miss the 2 mpg I lost immediately (I drive 80 miles a day to work).so now I'm looking for the lightest possible wheel options because let's face it downsizing tires isn't an option.

 

what size tires did you go with? and whats your mpg now compared to what it was orginally?

 

I went from 245-75-16 to 275-55-20 and I've lost about 2 mpg (20.5-18.7) I will probably end up with something between 16"-18" rim size with 275 or 285 tires.

Edit* In actual inches I went from a 30.5" tire to a 31.9" tire that is also an inch wider.

 

I hate to be like this, but I don't think that is really considered up a size on the tires. I would think that's more of a complete overhaul on the wheel/tire package. I honestly wouldn't think getting 18.7 is too bad considering what you have now. I had stock wheels on my '11 with 265/75/16 tires and was getting 18mpg.

 

Thats another thing I'm unsure of would a lightweight 18" wheel with a 32" tire be "lighter" than the same wheel in a 16" with the same 32" tire for a 16" rim?

 

It's a truck.. Mine bone stock never saw above 15mpg let alone 20.5.
Just rock it how it is, there's not a big enough difference to change it.

 

Yea it's definitely the weight of the 20s. I have 20s with light tires and I still lost a good amount of mpg.

 

If you're happy with the setup of the wheels/tires you have now, I wouldn't change them. You're not going to get much if any better changing them to a lightweight 18 with 32s. You also have to consider the tread on the tires as well. Not just the size of it.

 

I think the 20's are to big for now. I came from full size trucks and always ran 35's and 20's with a level or slight lift. I loved those but they seem out of place on this truck, since I'm only doing 2.5" of lift for now I'm thinking if I step to like 18's anyways I may as well go light weight. I'm used to low teens for mileage so it's nice getting good mileage for once, plus I imagine it would free up some power too.

 

Have you calculated the 4.7% difference in rev per mile/circumference?
If you were getting 20 mpg before, that would be about 1mpg.

 

You want a light wheel? SCS F-5 16x8. Not only are these Tacoma specific wheels, but they are a site vendor and they look bad ass. They weigh 19lbs and have a max load of 2100lbs. For $145 a rim you can't go wrong. This wheel also comes in a 17x8.5 at 22lbs @ $170 ea.

 

FN Wheels are super light as well.

Appreciate the input guys I will check these out! 19lbs seems super light, I figure lighter can't hurt anything and I wouldn't mind hitting 20 again.

 

Also remember that when it comes to acceleration, for every pound or rotational inetia removed from a wheel or tire package its roughly equivilant to 3-4lbs off the vehicle. So for example loosing say 10lbs a corner is 40lbs making your vehicle accelerate like its 120-160lbs less.
