[SOLVED] Howling noise between 35-45

Just tried looking the plugs up on ACE's site. Can't find them. Do you have a part number?

So we need 9/16, 11/16, 7/8 and what other sizes? These sizes came from previous posts. Thanks for coming up with a solution. Once i have the sizes i need, i will be buying them in the a.m. My dc trdor made this howling noise badly. Have holes taped for now. Also had high pitched whistle at hwy speeds in wind. Wound up being window seal in front pasenger side window.

I plugged the wrong holes on my first post and was advised by a fellow member, Bella, to move to the forward most holes to allow for drainage. So you only need 2 x 9/16 plugs for the forward most holes. I additionally plugged a hole on top that takes a 3/4 inch plug (doesn't effect the howling but thought I would prevent doesn't and water from getting into the arm.)

Using a micrometer, the 9/16" plug is exactly 14.18mm or .558 inches. The 3/4" plug is exactly 19.0mm or .747 inches.

In a previous post I stated that I used a 7/8" plug but that was error. Ace Hardware had the 3/4" plugs in the 7/8" bins.

 

I have also been playing with this too. I'm an airline pilot with too much time on my hands! The caps for the holes cost me about $1.40, which was quick and easy. But I also like the "Vortex Generator" idea to disrupt the airflow.

 

I don't have the noise on mine. But with 5he lift it changes the angle of the control arm. That might be enough for me alone.

I also see the skid plate for the control arm being a good fix also. It covers all the holes. Overall it also help with windage under the truck.

I think I would try putting in some carraige bolts to make it so that water can come out of the drain holes but you don't have the noise. Just a thought

 

No the Airdamm was removed for a bit on mine to eliminate it.

This is what I have done over the past couple months. Others have tried different things,

• Folded and covered the mirrors
• Taped all door and window seamss
• Unlatched the hood and drove it
• Stuffed Fiberglass insulation between the bed and the cab
• Rode in the bed to hear anything coming from driveline
• Thankfully I did not have to remove The Tonneau, the step,Mud Flaps, Deflectors as the noise was there previous to installation
• Taped up windshield
• Sealed the tailgate
• Removed the Air Dam

Toyota threw me for a loop when they said "it was driveline noise" That was simply not acceptable. From the beginning I thought the howl was harmonic turbulence and could be found. I stopped looking for solutions when Toyota said that. (They should know right?) and went into sale mode and looked at the Ridgeline as an alternative which gave Toyota more time to fix it.

while under the truck one day a blast of wind caused a fast howl, I knew then it was not driveline and we went back to the drawing board. I talked with Bob about the LCA. He sent me a pic and led me quietly to what he learned. When I saw it, I thought this HAS to be the source with the way it is drilled out. So another round of taping different holes and driving until the solution was found and which holes to plug.

Drainage should not be an issue as the top hole is plugged as well and the open holes are lower than the plugged holes.

Loving my truck again....

BTW the right side on my truck does not fit the 9/16s plug. It uses smaller plugs (guessing 1/2") as on my truck the holes are smaller.. Which makes sense since I thought the sound was coming from the right side this whole time....Could it be Toyota was using up older control arms and switched to a new design hoping we would not fuss about the howling?

 

So, any thoughts as to why some have it (or at least can hear it) and others don't? Could it really be as simple as a different batch of control arms?

i just got back from ace hardware were i purchased my plugs. i installed them and sure enough it took care of the blowing in the bottle sound which was driving me crazy. i know the holes are in there for a engineering purpose, probably to help drain and dry the inside of the control arm out. now, if they have to be replaced down the road because i covered the holes, i think toyota better replace them for free. if not, it will cost them more if i sue for hearing lost. many thanks go out to bob1946, TacoBella, and everyone else involved. also i think there should be an incentive check sent to you guys for finding this, of course from toyota. once again a big R+!!

 

If the top hole is plugged then their isn't a point for a drainage hole right?
There's another smaller hole in the arms than also can be for drainage.

I'm thinking about plugging all 3 holes in the bottom

 

It's not very loud. Just persistent and those speeds.

the 7/8 plug will not work like you said, it is to large. the 3/4 plug fit loosely and the wind blew it out. i used hillman plugs, maybe yours are different. right now i have duct tape over the top holes until i figure out what size or brand to get.
