Manual Transmission Fluid Change

I can't say from first hand experience with the shifter in these trucks, but it sounds like it's a two piece stalk. There is probably a set screw where the two connect that isn't fully tightened down. If you can pop off the shifter boot, it should be obvious what the issue is.

This is a prime reason why you don't let other people work on your truck. You don't know what they missed.

Well thats what you get for going to the dealership. These gaskets cost me between 0.50 to a dollar.

 

but then again what's 16 dollars to 150+k more miles. maybe we need a charity for you so you could afford OEM gaskets

 

FWIW, total cost for the "insurance" of new gaskets when I did mine was less than $13, including tax...

Thanks. I called auto zone and they were out of their minds. They said I didn't even have gaskets on the tranny, and even worse, they tried to sell me the wrong weight for the actual oil.

I guess I just have to order everything online.

I think they broke one of the alignment/locking ring holding pins and didn't tell you. That is the only way your shifter could pivot and not just pop right out of the tranny. Unfortunately it isn't a replaceable part, you'd need a new top piece, lemme get you a picture.

You can see them on the sides of the shifter turret the two pins/pawls keep the shifter from turning and keep the shifter locking ring in place. Excuse the dirty shift hole, I wiped it after this pic and gave it a nice new bushing.

 

Those are, indeed, the TOYOTA part numbers.

FWIW, I believe they're called "CRUSH WASHERS," not GASKETS. The prices listed were from the local Toyota dealer, since shipping killed online options for me.

 

Actually just fixed it. It wasn't the whole part spinning, just the black part. Apparently there was glue on it from the factory. So I just put some JB weld on there after I cleaned the surface.

 

Huh, weird. So the rubber isolator just wasn't grabbing the metal shaft. Well that's a nice fix, I'm glad it was a simple problem.

I just picked up a 2004 Tacoma, and I'm looking to do all 4 fluid swaps and now I'm confused at the part numbers... And I'm not seeing any info in the manual online (truck didn't come with original manual). So I ordered the correct oils (that much I know), but for the washers/gaskets I ordered this:

That will cover the two diffs and the transfer case, and I need to buy another set for the transmission. Reading over the part numbers Norton posted, however, I'm not sure the above kit I got is correct because none of the part numbers match up. For about 4x the price I could snag the parts individually:

That seems like overkill though - and I'd end up with a ton of extra gaskets. Maybe I'll need to see if the dealership would sell me the ones I need as a kit? Does anyone know of a source I can get all 8 washers/gaskets I need in one stop? Thanks!

Your manuals show as being available for download here, though I don't think it will clarify this issue.

I purchased all of my washers/gaskets individually from the local stealership. Toyota changed some of the part numbers before I bought my last set. The cheat sheet I made for myself may help...
