At least in Southern California , having it "built" is basically waiting for Toyota to have one similar or exact to your liking. Then whenever there's a dealer near you that happens to have one shipped to them, they'll have that dealer call you. From what I was told, Toyota doesn't look at your request and go to the factory and make one specially for you. In my case I put together a access cab trd off road quicksand.. I was getting calls for quicksand doubles cabs, or sr5 access quicksand. The dealer would then tell me that they were informed that this was a truck I was looking for ...

I had this car "built" in October .. And January came along and there was nothing that I built available.

What pisses me off is that they advertise a configuration, like the TRDOR or TRDSP with a 6MT, then they don't bother building enough of them. So when you show up to the lot to buy one, you end up in an Auto. 3 years down the road, there is no 6MT option anymore, and the company uses sales trends to determine that only X amount were sold, therefore, it must not be popular enough of a configuration to bother manufacturing it anymore. This is how they justify getting rid of manual transmissions in the US. Look in markets overseas, particularly in Europe. Automatics are just barely catching on over there. Most cars, even luxury cars, have a stick in them. It's a shame they're all going away over here. Some buyers really do care how much control they have over their vehicle, but buying a stick is a really difficult endeavor in America these days, even when it's an advertised option.

I went on Toyota.com and it let me build a doublecab manual V6 Inferno OR ... so I went into dealership, and they said they would put it in the system and let me know if they could get one or something similar. I gave them 4 colors, and I was okay with a few package options but I had to have tow package and I preferred to not have tech package (want the headroom because I'm 6'1" and don't like smacking my head on the roof when bouncing around offroad). They got exact what I asked for, gave deposit, and then couple of weeks later got build date 1/21. From what I've read I can expect a few weeks for transport, so probably get it first or second week of February ...

Will it actually work out that way? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I dunno, but I'm okay waiting to get the options I wanted so I don't regret it later. I know if I wait for the build I ordered I won't think, "damn, I really wish I had of gone with something else." I guess the only thing I could regret is not waiting for a TRD Pro, but if history is any indicator then if you really want TRD Pro performance it's not difficult to buy the parts to build a lower trim up.

Similarly, with a lot of these parts for modifying that have come out, like tonneau covers, the first ones to come out seem to have a few issues. It doesn't seem unreasonable to just drive the stock vehicle for a little bit and wait for aftermarket manufacturers to sort their shit out. I could regret wasting $ on an aftermarket part that ends up having issues (like leaky covers ...). Sometimes waiting is a perfectly valid choice.

    Stock... For now...
So I test drove an SR5 auto before ordering my TRD OR manual. I will say that the SR5's ride was more comfortable and less harsh for on road driving. And after getting my TRD OR in and driving it, I can confirm that the ride is a little more harsh. The Sport has a suspension upgrade as well, it is an on road sport tune, and I would imagine this would be more comfortable during on road driving.

Also, the reason these trucks are similar price is that they are similarly equipped. Trade cheap unpainted black fender flares for color matched. Trade more expensive off road tires and 16 in rims for more expensive 17 in rims and on road tires. Trade off road suspension for a on road sport suspension. Add e-locker and a-trac (a-trac can't cost that much as it was already developed for the previous gen and doesn't require any new hardware on the truck.) But the main thing is, you are looking for a manual. The bread and butter of the Off road and why it is more expensive than the sport is the new Crawl control and MTS for automatic transmissions only. Since the sport doesn't have this and neither does a manual OR it keeps them in similar price brackets.

One of your concerns, the Sport WILL have the clutch start cancel switch, so no worries there. Aside from looks and the different suspensions (personal preferences), the ONLY thing you are missing out on is the e-locker and a-trac. Like others have said, if the time comes and you want to add a locker there are after market ones available. So the ONLY thing you can't replace is a-trac. I can tell you, so far with my OR, 4x4 has gotten me where I have wanted to go, and I have never pressed the locker button or a-trac. I will admit, I bought this model because it has those features as well as to my eye I like the look of the OR over the sport and wanted OR tires. Also for resale, the Sport is still a TRD and has the upgraded TRD interior and will hold its value just as well as the OR.

So do what you want, but if you want that OR, then tell your dealer and DON'T settle for less than what you want. But if all your concerned about and is causing you to switch over is resale and holding its value, you already did yourself a favor by picked a Tacoma which has the best resale.

Good luck man! You won't be disappointed with a manual Tacoma!

I could give you a dealer's number just south of Nashville in TN who could get you a DCSB OR MT by taking a swap. Depends on the color you want.

If this is correct Toyota is just as dishonest as the dealers. I saw my order placed in the system. I sat with the fleet manager as he placed the order in the system. At the end he got the bar code for this vehicle. If it's a lie as you say they perfected cheating the consumer. This Monday I should have a date of manufacture . And no you can not choose what weekday you want it built.

    Time will tell.

It's kinda hard to text and drive while you're eating a big mac and getting a water foot massage with a manual though. So I get why manuals are a dying breed.

Looking to purchase 2016 Inferno 4x4 OR
I did a lot of research (Off Road vs. Sport) and I ordered my Inferno OR 6 weeks ago. I was just notified by my Toyota dealer that the truck will be built on February 16th. Like others said, it is so worth the wait for the OR edition. I'd also wait longer if I had to but I wanted to configuration that I've always wanted.

    Heres the majority consensus
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/vote-on-2016-tacoma-trim-level.394489/

I wanted TRD OR and the votes confirmed my choice and I ordered/got exactly that.
    My wait was 13 weeks.

Buy in in RockHill , see Mr Funderburke. They beat NC prices well over a $1,000. I also live in NC. I ordered exactly what I wanted and didn't get the dealer add on stuff.

We're moving to Va Beach. I am going through a dealer in Elizabeth City, NC, which is just over the border. Rock Hill is in SC, correct?

I wanted a limited as I do little off roading and was lucky enough to get one. All my others were TRD Off Roads, just wish you could order all the options you wanted instead of being limited like we are because you lose some of the things you really like.

My order : TRD OFF ROAD/ACCESS CAB/WHITE/Automatic Transmission. It has the Premium/Tech/Tow. On goes the Snugtop Rebel canopy and various other accessories. I've driven my manuals since 1970, still driving my '68 FJ40, and we put a 6 speed MANUAL tranny in the '11 Subaru Outback. Love the AT in the Tacoma. Took 11 1/2 weeks to get it from time of initial order, was well worth the wait.
Guys, (and ladies), comprehend your priorities. What's more important? Having "THEE truck you want? or having A TRUCK, NOW?
YOU, are the final authority over YOUR priorities, AND your OPINIONS.

    2016 Inferno DCSB TRDOR 6MT w/ Tech & Tow (Sold 7/3/19)
UPDATE: Dealer emailed me to call him. He and the inventory manager were able to find an Inferno DCSB TRD OR 6MT with Prem/Tech and Tow, and they "red-dotted it". Says I should have the truck delivered by March 7. We fly back to the US in February, so they said they'd put us in a loaner vehicle until the truck arrives. Worked out great. For anyone interested, there is an UNCLAIMED TRD Sport DCSB 6MT in Inferno with all the fixin's headed to Toyota of Elizabeth City, NC. A loaded TRD Sport with a 6MT will not last long, I can assure you. Thanks to everyone that added their thoughts to this thread. I think I made the best decision, and I'm glad it all worked out.
