OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

I really can't say better things about the bushing. 0 vibes. Easy install with the right tools. Take your time and realize you will need force on the CV.

 

Cog, I have ecgs bushing and the install tool that came with it. I Connot get it behind the bearing even with some raps! The bearing that is installed looks to be maybe 1/16 further in than flush. Do you have any tricks up your sleeve? The video that chase posted from ecgs shows a slight rap might be needed but I can see that it hangs up on the back part of the race. Soo close and yet soo far.

 

Mine did get hung up a bit. Make sure it is wedged to the point that it will no longer go further into the groove and hit it (I hit mine with a sledge and a brass drift) obviously not going crazy but this is metal on metal, force will be needed. Once in you can tell as it is free to turn inside the groove etc.

 

Thanks for the quick response, and...the flat side of the puller faces out? Correct? The one I got was used and the impact marks were on the stepped side. I thought I heard Shane say flat side out.

 

Yes the step pointing towards the spider gear. I'm sure it would work the other way also but i like to follow directions lol

 

Anybody know the answer to this? "If one were to purchase the ECGS kit but was unable to do the work themselves, how many labor hours should it take a shop in my area to do the work?"

I feel good about doing it, except not sure how hard it is to pull the axle off, and a little nervous about pulling th old bearing out. From the guys that have already done this repair, how long did it take you?

 

I'd say it will probably take you anywhere from an hour and a half to 3 hours realistically if you've never done it before. Give yourself time and make sure you have the tools you need

 

Just FYI for this thread, I've had good luck with Timken bearings in my differentials. They're good quality if you don't go with Toyota bearings.

 

What bearings and where? Your front differential or your wheel bearings? Your info says you have a 2wd so...no front differential.

 

I'm talking differential bearings. I used Timken when I had my 400 hp 5.0 mustang coupled with 3.73 gears. I never had any humming or vibration for the whole time I had the car, about 100k miles. Usually when bearings go out they will make a humming or vibration noise.

Lifted the front end 2" over the weekend, and now I, too, get to be a part of this exclusive club. Yea.

Between 35-40 mph I witness an oscillating drone.... ....vtvtvtVTVTVTvtvt........vtvtVTVTVTvtvt........vtVTVTVTvtvt...... Turn on 4-hi and it goes away. Turn it off and after a few seconds it comes back.

You guys having any luck with the TSB, or should I just go straight to ECGS?

 

Some do some don't, I am one of the ones that has had issues with the dealer doing this for me under warranty. I would still go to the dealer, its free and they change your front diff fluid as well. I have a call into Toyota corporate and they are working on getting another dealer to take care of me.

 

What was their reason for the denial? Considering there's a specific TSB for this issue.

 

I called it a vibration and not a groaning/grinding which is what the TSB says its for. They said its very specific and the tech flat out refused to do it, even though when you engage 4x4 its completely gone. I think what happened was they admitted an issue and tried some fixes to resolve it, but they didn't work and all along I was quoting the TSB and asking for it. They denied all along and now I think they don't want to admit they are wrong, so now Toyota will have to take care of it and send me to another dealer. Make sure you say you have a groaning and I wouldn't say vibration only.

 

TSB has fixed mine so far.

 

I called it vibration. My dealer said, "We found the grinding noise". They fixed it.

It would seem it's more about the dealer than anything else.

So far so good on my TSB repair.

 

I guess I'm going straight to the ECGS. A local guy here, who's done this before and is very generous with his time, offered to do it for me. Has the tools and everything. So I ordered the new bushing. I'll report back with the results.

 

Can't go wrong there! Haven't heard anyone say it didn't work for them.

 

lol. "Groaning" vs "Vibrations"?? That's some petty bullshit. Sorry to hear you have to deal with such a dealership.
