It Happened to Me!

I had a laugh when I heard about Toyota's recall for accelerators sticking on floor mats and thought it rather absurd until it happened to me.

I have a 5 lug Tacoma with the factory rubber floor mats. I had to merge with fast moving traffic and did something I rarely do, I floored the accelerator. The mat had slipped far enough forward (not very far at all) that it stuck under the accelerator pedal when it was wide open.

Because of the publicity about this I realized what was happening and reached down and yanked the mat backwards which released the pedal. It had my heart going, let me tell you.

Toyota really does need to replace these accelerator pedals. I was surprised at how easy it was to have it stick.

Until yours is replaced be ready for this problem to raise its ugly head. Think about what you are going to do before it occurs and your mind will react faster. Be ready to pull the mats back. If they are jammed be ready to turn the ignition key off.

Glad you are ok. Since all this began I always figured my safety out would be to throw the tranny into Nuetral. It would rev uncontrollably, but no one would get hurt. I've got Weathertechs so I should be good anyway.

 

good reaction time, glad you are fine. we all probably think that if it happens to us we'll know what to do but who really knows until it really happens.I bought some cheap wal mart mats for the truck and did not really cut the cut out surrounds correctly so the mat wedges against and cuts around the foot rest on the far left so there is no way it will slide forward. if I ever think it will be a problem I'll break out a tool and cut the pedal myself. I bet a pair of tin snips will cut that thing just like they cut the mud flaps, tin snips FTW

Yeah man, nice reaction time! Just all the more reason for me to scrap my carpet and floor mats all together and bedline the floor!

Glad to see you're ok. I took out my rubber mats and left the OEM carpet ones in.

 

Glad you are ok. I felt the same way you did and the exact same thing happened. I posted earlier this month about it.

 

If the mat slipped forward that means you were not using the plastic hooks or the rubber mat was stacked on top of the regular mat. Correct?

 

Did you have them stacked on the carpet mats or just the rubber mats? What about the clips to keep them in place? Just curious if your hooks broke or if your mats were stacked...

Only asking so others who have the same set up can be prepared or fix the issues before the same thing happens to them.

But glad to hear you kept a cool head and were able to move the mats before anyone was hurt.

The rubber mat was the stock mat supplied by the dealer and there is no provision for hooks in it. I was using only the one mat.

I'm putting a cable tie on the right side of the mat and tying it to the front seat until Toyota provides the new accelerator.

 

The dealer probably gave you an incorrect mat. My stock Toyota rubber mat I bought last year had holes for the hooks.

 

You'll be surprised what you find under the stock carpet. Proceed with caution.

Glad you're alright. I'd axe the cable tie idea and just make your own holes for the stock mat hooks. It will take you like 5 minutes; and it could save your life. Not a bad benefit / time ratio I'd think.

 

Yes, this can happen with our trucks as it has happened to me in mine and other vehicles as well. Just drop into neutral, pull mat back, easy fix. And BTW, I stopped by the dealership to get a small part for my wife's Corolla and I spoke to them about this. They are gonna cut the pedal back (I forgot how much) then in April install new pedals. I am in NO way letting them touch this in my truck when I get my letter in the mail! Sorry but my 6-spd is perfectly fine!
