I have read through this build thread and have a few questions. My current trailer is just a commercial box trailer 4x6. GVW at about #1900. It has served well for the last 2 summers in Montana and Idaho. Recent truck lift upgrade dictates that my trailer must follow. So I am switching out to a full 16" from the current 12" wheels. there are no brakes on the current trailer. That may change.

Did you use any adapters (centering spacers) on the trailer hubs to the SCS rims, or are you just using the lug nuts for centering?

Are you using inch or metric wheel studs for your wheel mounts? If you changed what length?

I will pretty much be adding your axle/spring combo under my trailer. These trailers really measure 81" on the box and the rear axle is way aft of the of the 40/60 which can now be corrected. To support and drag the current trailer around, the tongue tube is just a single 2x3

Thanks for showing and building a great trailer, should last you at least 3 trucks

No adapters or spacers. Just bought the axle I wanted, 6x5.5 hubs/brakes, and acorn lug nuts.
SAE wheel studs that came with the drums.
Hindsight being 50/50...I feel like I have too much weight up front for my particular axle location. If I were to build another one, I would move the axle forward and extend the front doors slightly (I needed a specific size on the front doors) -or- figure out a way to move the water tank under the frame. This could be done, but not with an off the shelf water tank.

"Off the shelf" has its advantages. Then if you lay the tank down you get into usable volume. Upright tanks are better.

I'm at the primitive side. No ele or water storage. Having built yachts I am not looking to use my precious time fixing anything out on the trail. Do carry propane and hardly ever build a fire.

Moving my axle forward 5" puts me at 39%. I'll backtrack my current loading and rethink this.

    What's your current tongue weight?

Mine is exactly 60/40 in terms of length of the main box.
As for tongue weight, that's one of those things I should scale...but I never have. :anonymous:
Fully loaded and ready to go, it's more than I can lift up for more than a second or so. So it's in the hundreds. Lets just say I'm happy I put a wheel on the tongue jack.

Bought mine beginning mid trip my first summer without any jack. Could not find one while on the road. Was a bitch going off and on. Dreaded dealing with it. Once home I fixed that.

One test is how much your truck sags just adding the trailer? Compare that against sag of two bodies sitting on the tailgate.

Actual tongue weight is a moving target as you use and restock supplies.

Weight on ends has a slower movement rate than that same weight closer to the rotation center.

Can you recall the source on your u-bolt plates? What might be the shortest length of shackles that I can get away with as I am not really concerned with a max travel trailer?

Bash plates I got from Sierra 4x4 trailers. I got my fenders, bash plates, and tongue jack from them. They make off road trailers and lids for military trailers. They are headquartered in Gardnerville, which is 30 minutes from my house. Honestly, the owner is a really good guy, but terrible when it comes to business practices. I would not recommend buying anything off his website (if he is even still in business). You can do your own research on the company. If you show up on his doorstep and he has the products you want in stock, he is great to deal with. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

As for shackles, it all depends on what spring pack you use. The shackles I designed were to accommodate the lateral length the pack required to fully cycle. You can do shorter or longer as long as you understand the ramifications.

Thanks for the heads up on the spring plates. I should be using your spring package 42" e-e. I'll experiment with a shorter length at the start.

I use to live up in South Shore for about 9 years. Most notably were at Zephyr Cove and Kingsbury and never owned a 4x4. '81 Christmas/New Year's storm dumped 6'+ on Kingsbury and 3-4' at Lake level. Don't miss shoveling partly cloudy.

4-4.5" shackle then. I started with 5", reduced to 4". 4" is a money maker with a standard size RTT. With the bigger tent I would go to 4.5" and not look back.

I live in Round Hill in Zephyr Cove. Own a pretty wicked Honda 828 snow blower that's been parked the last 2 years. I'm beyond ecstatic that it's got almost 1 hour on the clock this year already.

You can expect much more on it's way. You might see a lot of cabin fever this year too.

The Dingleberry got a little bit of love. My old Costco battery finally quit so I picked up a Centennial Group 31 deep cycle.
I also got on the Overland Solar group buy and picked up the 60 watt kit. Fit and finish on this thing is top notch! Came with alligator clips (which I'll probably never use) as well as a permanent battery mount with Anderson plug on the end for easy setup and take down. Literally takes 2 minutes to setup the panel and plug it into the battery. Luna approved
