A few days ago you asked how the CVJ axles looked for quality. I found a couple of pics I took when I first got them, and then a couple of more I took yesterday.







For reference, in this ^^^ pic, far left is the aftermarket spare I've been carrying in the OSK for the past couple of years, then next to it is the one you got from me.

FWIW, my two aftermarket ones (one being a reman) have the tulip shaped inner instead of round. I may have CVJ rebuild my one OEM one I still have. They seem to suggest that the outer boot doesn't have the same issue the inner boot has.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. Still a gen 1'er. 2002 Tacoma I bought in 2008. 5 speed manual Off-road package. Occasionally tow my Casita with it. Within the next year or two hoping to get a gen 2 or gen 3. Could use some extra horseys to pull it in the higher elevations. Here are some pics of my Tacoma in the wildlands of Wyoming. =)

 

FT, The CO2 in C25 is an oxidizer. Instead of shielding the aluminum in the casting from the oxygen in the air you just made a non-weld of aluminum oxide. The non-weld needs to be ground out and if possible re-welded with argon shielding.

 

That does seem to be odd behavior on their part and is different from what my experience was. I wonder why the difference.

Have you seen these $60 boots they are pushing. I would love to see a picture of them to see them next to the ones I got. Just to see how they are different.

Personally, I don't see the need for high angle outer boots. Well, at least from the perspective of tearing boots. I am fairly certain that it is always the inner boots that tear.

For those that have torn a boot or boots, have you ever torn an outer one? I suppose, it could happen from trail debris, but that isn't what I am talking about. Who has torn an outer boot from too high axle angles?

 

Both my inners 'sploded but neither of the outers did and my front is at 3.25".

 

I knew it was not the correct method at the time. It was the only thing i had on a late Friday night before a demo derby on a Saturday. Ended up not running it after getting defeated by 3 bent and sheared off engine mount bolts still in the block at about 3am.

 

Toytec Eibach coils I'll bet. Pretty sure Monte only tore the inners on all of his too.

That is likely why I've never torn mine. I've kept my lift to ~2.5"

 

I'll be lowering it a bit eventually, it's not really what I want it to be right now. But money is the factor, hopefully some decent coilovers and better rear shocks are in my eventual future. Definitely pulling a leaf come spring time so it sits with slightly less rake.

 

I'm the same boat. Running Eibachs and tore my inners pretty fast. Outers look practically brand new though with 120,000 stock miles, ~20,000 lifted miles

Tune-able, adjustable shocks are definitely worth it if you can afford it.

This is the sort of thing that makes me wonder why CVJ is pushing those more expensive outer boots. Doesn't seem like they are necessary.

They likely have built some already, you send in your core once they send you an axle right? But it is weird that the price is lower on the "better" boot.

 

Have you seen a pic of the two options? Which one do I have? Is that the high angle one? As I told you, I did not pay extra for outer boots.
