    The possibilities.

Hope not, but no response from OP yet makes me wonder.

LMAO.......first off I should have videoed it. You could cut the tension with a knife.

Second. My buddy eric and I have been fabricating jeeps sense we were 14yrs old and yes. Surprised sometimes with one of us are alive.
if you look at the top we used a small pipe so we could slide an extension and socket down to the nut.
Getting to it was not the issue. The issue was lining up the shock shaft to the top hole while comers sing it with a huge john Deere tractor shacking.lol
Ended up wrapping a string around the shaft and positioning it while compressing the spring.
I'll agree 100% not the smartest or safest thing we have ever done but we were both SO excited to finally start this project we throw out all common sense. Thought you all would enjoy!

Yes but then how would you adjust the "adjustment plate" on the bottom?

I posted this in another thread regarding spring compressors, but my buddy got hit in the face by spring a few years back. He was using a cheapo compressor, and it either broke or he wasn't using it properly ... either way, the damage was incredible. Lost most of his teeth, his jaw broken in multiple spots, he facial/orbital bones smashed, one eye popped. About 12 surgeries later he now has all implant teeth, his eye is mostly functional, and he's handsome again. But you can definately notice the way he smiles and talks there is something not quite right .... DON'T MESS with SPRINGS PLEASE!!!

I used a vice to compress the springs once or twice... just barely held the spring by the corner of the jaw. Worked though.

Either use a wall-mounted spring compressor or do it in-situ with a floor jack.

When I had my Icon 650 lb spring replaced at the shop, even the wall-mounted compressor looked strained.

It would've been perfectly safe if you had built something stable to bolt the bottom of the shock into, honestly thats the only sketchy part about the rig.
 for getting the job done.
