    This is actually the case. S rated batteries are meant to hold up well to southern summers and N rated batteries are made to handle repeated exposure to sub-freezing temps. I can't tell you what's different from a design or construction standpoint, but that's at least what the marketing department wants you to believe.

    Is an AGM battery specific to the northstar brand? Or is that a battery type made by different manufacturers ?

    What does the F mean in 27F? I've seen 27N and 27S mentioned in other threads for northern or southern latitudes. I get that. But what is F? Again, thanks for your time.

    To the OP, you have a potential safety issue and you should try getting a new one under warranty. A bulge on the side is one symptom of an alternator overcharging and can cause the battery to explode. Another cause is exposure to extreme hot/cold, but I wouldn't think that would result from a barely two year old battery. Go get that looked at ASAP! Matter of fact, I wouldn't drive the truck, I'd pull out the battery and take it to them, or call the service dept and explain what you have and let them make the call.

    I replaced my group 27 battery wih a 24 from Costco; they now carry Interstate batteries. Only difference between the two groups is reserve capacity. CCA will be similar depending on the brand and price range.

    It's not a bulge like it's blowing up under pressure. It's literally a bend in one of the internal lead plates DIRECTLY under where that wing nut clamp sits on top of the battery. Unfortunate, because it really does look like one might have tightened the clamp too much causing compression. It's barely visible from the outside, but when I press on the outter plastic I can feel that something in there is bent. But the thing is- I know for a fact it wasnt me that did it. You'd really have to screw that wing nut down tight, almost intentionally, to bend it like it is.

    In that case, the battery may be alright as long as the casing doesn't crack and start spilling battery fluid. Sounds like you are left fixing it. You should be OK if battery is holding 12-13 volts.

    I have a lot of electronics and have considered having 2 batters but I would rather just have a MEGA one.

    You shouldn't rely on voltage alone to tell you battery health. You can have five dead cells and one good cell and still register appropriate voltage. The specific gravity of each cells liquid component should be checked with a refractometer or hygrometer. My last battery had severely low values but one cell out of six was perfect. Registered great voltage.

    Www.batteryfaq.org is an excellent site. It's where I got a lot of info when my battery needed testing.

    I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    So after reading 4 pages here. does nobody else is "oldfashioned" and simply adds acid and water to keep battery running longer ? Majority of battery problems are because water evaporated. All you need is to add distilled water until plates are covered, shake vigorusely (because acid is heavier than water so it tends to sink to bottom) than put on slow and steady charge?
    Keep it for another year or two ?

    The problem is what causes the battery to die. If it's Sulfation of the Lead plates (formation of Lead Sulfide) you just need to get a new battery. There are two types of sulfation reversible (reversed by fully charging a battery to full levels) and non reversible (not really anything you can do about this) Adding more Sulfuric acid and Distilled water is not going to fix it furthermore without having a Hygrometer or a Refractometer to properly measure the SG you may be doing far more harm than good, not to mention the pH. If your water level is low because you live in a hot climate or are doing a lot of recharging then yes adding distilled water can help followed by a charge to full. (I would NOT shake a battery, least the cap fall off and you get nicely doused with Sulfuric Acid).
