Need opinions. Ok so today at work a coworker rooster tailed mud all over one side of my truck. A few hours later I decided to just take it to the car wash instead of hosing it off. so I pull up and the lady says oh you will have to get atleast the $7 wash no prob let me have the $12 one. I pull up to the guide track one guy on each side both have the spray wands thinking ok they will spray the big stuff off first. Nope first thing apparently owners daughter about 12 years old pulls out the brush on the dried mud and just goes to town you could actually hear it scraping. Then they start spraying it with water. I go through the wash pull up to the vacuums and see all the scratches about died. The owner of course is on the defense and says how do I know if the scratches weren't under the mud already. Then he says I have video let me pull it up. So he does and sure enough has video of her brushing dry mud. He then says well the detergent used that the brush is dipped in cuts dirt and mud instantly. I said bullshit you know you should have put water on it first. Anyway they tried buffing it out it's better but still very visible. These pics are after the buffing he said bring it in tomorrow and they will try wet sanding the scratches out. Your thoughts on this? I told him yeah I agree you don't know if I had scratches under the mud.(which it didn't it's a brand new truck) But common sense is you spray it off first and I also didnt plan on having a underage worker doing this to my black new truck.
Should I let them wet sand? Do I have any legal re course if the scratches don't come out?

Try this first. If it's just a clear coat scratch it should buff out with this followed by some good quality wax.image.jpg

Your first mistake was taking a black car to the car wash. Live and learn.

So sorry about your damage, thats the #1 reason I hand wash my car. I also never let the school car washes do my car. The kids throw the sponges at each other and they pick up sand. I just drive up and donate to them.

I can understand why you're pissed, damn, I would be LIVID and I'm a pretty even tempered guy.

When you run a fingernail over them, if your nail catches on them, they are through the clear coat and no amount of buffing is going to get them out. Wet-sanding may do the trick but make sure they know what they're doing. If you think they don't, make them agree to let you take it to a body shop for a proper repair at their cost. That would be fair and reasonable.

One can never have too many light bars.
Depends on the wash but most of them have a " not responsible for damage caused to the vehicle" sign.

Rule #1 of owning a car or truck. NEVER take it to a car wash. You always wash it yourself and if someone even offers to wash your car......you get that pimp hand ready and bitch slap them back into their rocking chair with authority.

Toyota does not use clear coat over black paint I'm told. Just black paint.

Man, I am really sorry about what happen to your truck. I would be sick! My new Tacoma is white but it would still show those scratches. I agree with the "QUOTE" in that I only wash my car by hand.

Damn. Start googling child labor laws in your state. Should have got something in writing before you left...assuming you didnt. Info about the girls name and age...and their agreement to fix it.

Yeah live and learn I even knew better that I should of washed the mud off myself but brought it there for convenience. Not sure if they are qualified to wet sand but I figure if they make it worse then they are really liable. I'm just so pissed at myself.

Ohh man I'd be so pissed. Good info here. To include the never go to a car wash. I don't even trust the touchless ones I do it by hand myself, always.

The other option is to get a Dual Action Polisher and different levels of cutting foam pads along with a scratch removing compound and work it over. But as someone mentioned if it's thru the clear coat it won't fix the problem and that will need to be taken to a body shop.

While they may have a sign that says not responsible for damage, I sincerely doubt it is binding. They have insurance for this kind of stuff. I scratched a car when I was a little kid and it cost a lot to pay for. I still remember getting punished for doing it. I don't know that I would trust them to do a wet sand on my brand new truck. Actually I'm pretty sure I wouldn't trust them to touch my truck further. I would give the guy a chance to make it right at a local body shop, if not there is always the pay an attorney $50-100 to write a letter on your behalf threatening legal action. Then there is always Social Media, Yelp, Google Reviews, plaster them with those photos and the info.

    Good luck man.

I say that for two reasons. 1. A body shop guy on this board disputed it. 2. When I took my truck to a body shop recently to talk about painting my grille, I asked him about that. He went on his computer for a couple minutes and confirmed, there's clear coat on paint code 202.

Yeah I'd look for the no responsibility sign.
Also I personally would not let them wet sand your car.
As someone said above who knows if they even know how to do it correctly.
