I've never looked at that, interesting. I'm having trouble thinking of why that would be if ECT is isolated to the transmission, but then again I fully admit to not completely understand how this auto transmission works.

I pushed the ECT PWR button for the very first time yesterday (I'm not F'N kidding!). She acted like a different animal! The higher performance difference was quite noticeable to me. I stepped down firmly on the pony pedal too. I was impressed by the acceleration of this new powertrain. I will be towing my loaded 2 place snowmobile trailer tomorrow (about 3,000 pounds GTW) for 31 miles of rolling country roads with speed limits ranging from 40-55 MPH.

If you can post some pics of your trailer! Let us know how it towed.

Seems like there's a serious argument on what ect does because it has evolved like toyota engines.

I was going to mention that my ect button does not exist because I drive a 5spd 3rz 4x4. That would lead me to believe that it only changed transmission shift points.

I would love to get the vvti 2tr in my 4runner though. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is the stupid fly by wire throttle.

The newer engines are nice though. The Highlander I own has the 3.5 v6 in it and I like how efficient it can be as well as how powerful it can be.

Towed it with no problems. ECT switch engaged and the RPMs rarely went below 2000. Hit 2500 on some steep hills but no worries keeping speed consistent.

Even if the ECT button only changed the shift points directly, when you increase RPMS over a given speed, the injection system and the Akinson cycle are changed by having the motor run at a higher rpm at the same speed.....in the same way, the VVT changes by RPM as well. So, when traveling at a higher rpm at say 35 mph, all of your settings would be different.

Because you do it manually and increase your RPM by just not shifting as you accelerate, your other settings are changing as well as your RPM increases. So the question should be, does the button allow the changes to be made more aggressively or differently, not whether they are made at all.

Mine is the 3rz which is a non vvti engine though. Now I would say that when I did have an ect on my old prerunner if I pressed the button the strength of the engine would increase. How did I know without a dyno? Because you could have the truck barely stopped with the brake pedal and when you pressed the ect button it would move the truck even though I did not let my foot off of the pedal. It's not a fancy test but it's a test I suppose.

    What is 3rz?

What your describing sounds like a drive by wire reaction. Perhaps the ECT button also causes the ECU to switch throttle maps?

There wasn't any drive by wire in 1999. The 3rz is in the same line of engines as the 22r and the 2tr. It is a 2.7L dual overhead cam, non vvti engine.

I have no idea if it did change throttle maps but it was a pretty basic ecu. The engine first appeared with a dizzy instead of coil packs.

Haha, that moron is convinced the ECT changes the engine tune and just won't let it go, even when proven wrong. drive by wire must be a term he just learned. he must have been a honda guy before

Thanks, I'm not familiar with all the engine code names. If your don't drive by wire, there won't be any throttle maps. Not sure how your truck is setup with ECT.

I see your grammar is getting better, how long did it take you to spell all that out? Did your spell checker slap you in a the face a few times as well?

My sleds are a total of 1,000 pounds. The aluminum trailer is 10' long x 8' wide with a lid, steel torsion axle and marine grade 3/4" decking. I am guessing a total of 2,500 ish? Someone else around here will probably be more accurate at the weight guess!

Nice. The trailer you see in my profile image is around 2500 lbs dry. I have been picking people's brains on here a lot about how it tows. Thanks for info.

I know this is a bit off topic, but when your towing that trailer in the snow have you experienced the so called 'Sway control' the truck has?

Has anyone figured out what they mean on page 84 bullet point #4 regarding the modified cam profile being modified to add additional valve lift? According to the drawing it looks like there is more than just timing adjustments happening. It looks like the cam lobe has 2-different profiles or is it 2-different cam lobe's with different profiles? See *a & *b in the drawing.

Modified compared to the previous version of this engine - there is no ability for variable lift on this engine. The dotted line is likely the previously used cam profile.
