I hope nobody gets butt hurt but as the owner of both the 2016 Toyota Tacoma Off Road and a 2015 Toyota Tundra Pro, I will say with 100% confidence the Tundra is twice the truck of the Tacoma. The Tundra is way more powerful allowing it to run interstate speeds through the mountains easily without the endless gear shifting of the Tacoma. The Tundra rides more comfortably. The only area the Tacoma shines is in severe off road situations. Hell the gas mileage difference is only negligible. Let the flames begin ( :

Avg per fuelly 15.4 vs 18.5 mpg is almost 20% difference. So negligible... ? As far as everything else. It is a full sized truck. Of course it is more truck/powerful etc. Lots of taco owners just don't want a full sized vehicle. The Tundra is a great truck, just not for everyone.

Change the ECT shift points and the Tacoma might have something. I also own a 2014 Toyota Highlander Limited and even though it has the same motor it runs substantially better than the Tacoma. The transmission is pathetically to tall on the Tacoma.

Well with that comparison, I considered the Ford Raptor with the Roush Supercharger. The Ford DEFINITELY trumped the Tundra. Except it got 12 mpg, and cost 70k.

I love my Taco. My wife and I looked and considered the Tundra, but the Tundra is full size NOT mid size. The Tundra has all the bells and whistles and a heftier price tag, but the Taco fit our needs for being mid sized with off road capability for when we travel in the far north and in heavy bush and off road trails. Sure it does not have all the features but it was $20k cheaper

The Raptor had EVERYTHING and with the phase 2 supercharger it had 590hp!

Isn't that kinda like comparing a Colorado to a Silverado? Or a Dakota to a Ram? Two different basic vehicles, each with it's advantages and disadvantages.
But, it's great that Toyota gives you the opportunity to make that choice, and doesn't limit you to one basic vehicle type.
Kinda like RAV4 Vs. 4Runner Vs. Highlander Vs.Sequoia Vs. Land Cruiser.

I had the supercharger on my last Tundra. I can appreciate your Raptor.

I would love a tundra, but living in the DFW metroplex, and going to the "big city" from the 'burbs on the regular, the Tacoma made more sense. On a road trip the other day, we needed to park near a destination and the only parking was tight. Well the lil Taco slid right in, where as a tundra or any other full size would have been a big time no go. So both have their plus and minuses. I'm sure when we move to Asheville, I'll get a tundra, or I'll just stick with midsize, just have to look at our needs then.

They are two different trucks for different purposes. You are comparing apples with oranges. Why not compare the tundra with a ford 150 or Dodge Ram. Compare the Tacoma with a fronteir or ridge line

I agree. I own both as well.

When pushing the Tacoma to 80+ speeds just keep with traffic, the mpg is much closer for the two.

    Tundra is 15 mpg.
    Tacoma is 16 mpg.

I agree with everything the op states. Only thing I want to add is the tundra is a towing champ.

Maybe because mine is a stock 15 PeeRunner but on our way to and from OKC this past week we were running 80-85 steady and I was knocking down 22.5 hand calculated.

"The Tundra is twice the truck" Really, since Tundra is in the full size category and Tacoma is a mid size, I would hope that statement is correct. Most Tacoma owners do not want or need a full size, therefore, the midsized ctegory exist. I looked at the Nissan Frontier and Titan, and guess what, the Titan is twice the truck of a fronteir. Oh yea, one more for you, my Dakota is half the truck of a ram 1500. And I would guess that the Tundra has a V8 compared to the V6 in the Tacoma, so it should pull/tow better. And as far as comfort, yes, the Tundra is more comfortable because it is bigger.

The Highlander has a 3.5 Otto cycle and the Tacoma has a 3.5 Atkinson cycle so they are not the same.
