    Hi Everyone,

New to the forum, and just purchased a new 2016 SR with the manual transmission. I love the truck, but when looking under it the other day noticed this. Just straight up bare metal on the welds in some spots...

Definitely wasn't expecting to see this on my a brand new truck.

    Thoughts?

I would show that to the dealer to have them address it....
Or at least put something on that to keep rust out.

Im not going to touch it until the dealer looks at it. Unfortunately the nearest dealer is 70 or so miles away. Cant believe I need to deal with this on a brand new truck...

Looks like flux to me since it's on the bead. My truck and I'm sure 99.9% of all Toyota trucks sold have the same exact thing.

If you are talking about the orange, it is weld by-product resin. If you doubt it, rub a white cloth on it. You won't get rust color. However, while it is currently covering/sealing the metal, if you chip off the resin, there is no paint underneath, so technically not ideal, but is sealing the metal.

    Edit: ^^ this

As above, it is on all of the trucks as far as I have seen. I did some close inspection on mine when someone else posted the same thing a while back.

The other welds arent showing this, so why here?

    This is normal?

Normal is subjective. However, it isn't bare metal or rust.

Why it doesn't occur on all welds I don't know, but there may be a prep process before painting that is not thorough enough. I don't know the Toyota frame painting process, but it could be electrically aided and the resin acts as an insulator, or the resin just repels the paint.

Ha dammit, I know better than to post without searching. But I just....posted without searching.

Good thread, with some nice trolling and name calling thrown in for entertainment ha. Just read through it - so I guess the verdict is this is normal, to some degree, and it would'nt hurt to put on some POR 15.

Im guessing it would be ok to apply the POR 15 directly over these spots without sanding? Or would it be advisable to sand lightly? What about priming, would that damage the existing resin?

I suppose my main question is, is there a definitive answer on whether it is worth trying to cover this up with POR 15 or similar, or if it is just fine the way it is...

Seriously though, I would rub a rag on it to see if it's rust or not.

If it's some sort of resin that if flaked off will reveal the bare metal underneath then that's not a good thing in my book. I unfortunately have the feeling in a few years that some 3rd gen owners will feel the pain of some 1st and 2nd gen owners due to rusting frames.....:bananadead:
