Load Range "C" (OR Close) off-road tire options..?

Not real satisfied with the Goodyear wrangler adventurer stock tires on my TRD -OR.
Dont want to go with an "E" rated tire (ride and weight).
Want something moderately aggressive. (but probably not full mud tires= want something with siping for winter use as well as off-road)

Probably something a little more aggressive. (I'd lean to the Dura Trac's)..

OK.. Noise not a big issue for me (they did not seem excessively noisy to me). Do very little highway driving--retired, so can pick my days.

bfg ko2's. Just got them on my 16 and notice no difference from stock sound. Handle well.

Toyo Open Country AT 2 -- both look interesting.

 

My new TRD came with Firestone Destination AT...got them off and sold them quick!
Bought Nokian R2 for winter and also a set of Wrangler Adventure as a summer tire.
Found the Firestone crappy off road tire (gravel roads) and sure not miss them.

 

The BFG KO2s are a great tire. The e rated 16 inch ones are definitely rough. I don't know your situation but you could consider moving up to 17 inch wheels and getting the c rated 265/70r17s.

Lots of people have gone with the TRD Pro 17 inch wheels to do this.

 

If you have a Sams Club membership you can get 265/70/16 Duratracs for about $700 out the door. They have $80 off through this weekend.

 

General Grabber AT2s or BFG KO2s.

 

The KO2 is an excellent tire all around. You won't be disappointed. Great on Trail/highway/city/snow and ice. I don't need to run 2 sets anymore (winters for highway driving and long commute to work each day). I run mine all year round and are actually comparable in grip to my company car that has BFG winter slaloms.

I have the E rated 265/70/ 17s. I would have gotten the c rated but I didn't realize they make and E and C. I would say the ride quality actually improved over stock tires and roll was less pronounced. Steering became slightly more heavy which I liked. MPG took a small hit (about 15 miles less a tank).

My only gripe is that highway driving / passing became a little more of a chore and gradual , but i would attribute majority of that to the height difference.

 

You have more options if you go up to a 265/75r16. Only an inch taller so you get an extra half inch of clearance for off road.

this is pretty aggressive and available in a C but I have never owned a set from Kelly. More of a Michelin man myself.

Have these on my wife's FJ. Hands down the worst tire I have ever had. Tread wear sucks, you will get stuck in wet grass and you can not keep them balanced. These were installed by the dealer before we purchased the vehicle as a wheel/tire package. Wheels were crap made them put the factory wheels back on but they had already sold the tires so I was stuck with the nitto tires.

 

I have run both Duratracs and toyo ATs on
my trucks. And overall I prefer the Duratracs. You will get a bunch of crap on this site for not running E rated tires. But I believe the Tacoma does not need them. I have run nothing but C rated tires on my Tacomas for the past 20+ years around the Deserts of Nevada. The only flats I've had were nail punctures or from those pos BFG ATs. I will never understand why BFG ATs get such a good reputation on this sight. In my opinion they have poor traction and once you get down to 25% tread the flats keep coming. YMMV

I agree. And guys that say they see no changes in performance or milage when switching to a one size up E rated tire are full of shit. I've been there done that. My 4.0 felt like a 2.7.

 

Agree on the "E tires. They ride rougher.
DuraTrac still #1 on list, but will keep looking. Thanks for the replies.
