Visible exterior is about $7,000. Most insurance companies total around 75% of vehicle threshold due to salvage values and chance of large supplement once repairs start. The frame is definitely what would determine this vehicle being a total loss. Tacoma held up well for this side impact. I see a lot of total loss vehicles, hit in the side. Glad everyone is OK!

I used to work with a girl who had a double cab and had basically a similar story. After Katrina many stop signs stayed down for months in and around the city. She got hit in the driver side from someone going about 45mph. She wasn't even wearing a seatbelt and had her window half way down and she walked away with only a few scratches and sore. They had to total her truck too due to frame damage, but it shows that these trucks are pretty damn solid if nothing else.

Sorry about that. I hoped it was clear the Taco was my only loss.

I was surprised too. It was the door, airbags, slight mangling on the inside and the bed damage that you can see. I was able to drive it home after the accident. The body shop mentioned misalignment of the bed, so maybe that indicates frame damage? The insurance offered a good value so I didn't protest too much.

Yes, guess I'll have to get a new 3rd gen truck. I was looking at the F150 for the extra leg room in the back seat but its an extra $5-10K more and I can't justify that when I've enjoyed driving Tacomas so much for the last 13 years.

    Thanks everybody for the well-wishes!

Glad every one is ok. That is one of my biggest fears driving around with my 14 month old daughter. I would also think about replacing the child seat since it has been involved in an accident.

Love the positive attitude!!! tacoma did its job and can be replaced. Likely frame damage for total, but thats a lot of body damage as well.

But best of all you and more importantly your daughter is safe!

Airbags are very expensive to replace. First thing I ask someone when I handle their claim because 90% of the time, that will mean a totaled vehicle.

By the way, insurance companies don't set the rules for total loss thresholds, the State does. We just go by the rules they set. But yes, in most states, that threshold is when repairs are 75% or more of the vehicle's value. We do sometimes make a business decision to total a vehicle that has less damage from the initial estimate because it's very likely the shop will find additional damage once they start tearing it down to do the work.

Very glad you and your daughter are feeling fine but don't be surprised if you start feeling the aches and pains within a few days.

The cost of the new child seat should be covered by the insurance company, no?

Would that be covered in an accessories rider, as well as things like lightbars, custom bumpers, Etc.?

I'm not sure, thus the question mark. I do know that child seats are considered scrap after a collision, and OP's seat was made worthless through no fault of his own.

Even in the most minor accidents, we (sorry, don't care to disclose my employer) always pay for replacement car seats. All we ask is for a photo of the replaced seat and a receipt or invoice for the new one. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Glad everyone is ok!! My daughter is almost two and that's what I'm constantly worried about. I'd like to think I'd see it in time and react but you never know with all the "capable" drivers out there. New seat is a must!

The child seat should absolutely be replaced

Thanks, yes, the car seat doesn't have a scratch on it but I provided the info to my insurance. I believe the other party's insurance will be paying for it, plus my deductible, plus rental car.

Yes, if the other party's insurance has already accepted liability, you can go through them for everything. Or you can use your own coverage and let your insurance company seek reimbursement from the other company. Me... if the other company is a good one, I'd just let them handle it... easier and you don't have to fork up your deductible up front. They can also pay your for replacement of your car seats instead of using your own insurance for that.

Well.... I learned that they're not accepting liability, yet. I'm going through my coverage and will be out of pocket for now. However, I got the police report today and it's about as open and shut as it gets so I'm sure they'll be accepting liability soon.
