I changed my oil the other day and this white film was on my cap and half way down the fill tube, can someone help me identify what it is or what's going on? Thanks in advance fellas.

My 2005 tundra access 4.7l v8 did this. Too many short trips or not properly warmed up. You don't drive enough and water condensation is building up. If it is not water condensation you could have a serious problem, but not likely.

I will say that I switched to synthetic the past 15000 miles and the milky stuff is gone. Occasionally a bit will show up, but not a thick film like in the past. In climates like mine where it can go from below freezing to above repeatedly this happens a lot.

X2 - normal. Too many short trips. No big deal. Just some water condensation.

That goo is oil that's broken down due to reacting with water. Short trips that don't warm up the engine contribute to it. It's not good because the oil is deteriorating.

Using better oil will eliminate it. I use my Tacoma for a lot of short trips between long excursions, I have no goo in my engine because I use AmsOil.

If I'd seen goo like that on the oil filler cap of my Tacoma when I bought it I would not have bought it.

I've always been suspicious of Mobil 1, you've confirmed my suspicions. Mobil 1 used to be something like 10% synthetic the rest was petroleum oil. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, at that time, allowed oil to be called "synthetic" if it had a small amount of synthetic mixed with petroleum oil. I don't know what what "full synthetic" means but it obviously doesn't mean 100% synthetic or it wouldn't be breaking down and turning to goo.

Interesting... I have always used Mobil synthetic and never had this issue when I lived in a large, dry city and drove a lot. Now I live in a small town where there is a lot of moisture and drive 2 miles a day resulting in the same goo on my oil cap. I think I might try amsoil next change to see if there is a difference.

I switched to mobile 1 FS on my last oil change, that is defiantly my problem. It is cold and I drive short trips but it shouldn't look like that. I will be switching to amaoil for sure.

You don't know what full synthetic means but you'll trash Mobil 1 over their claims of full synthetic.

Someone shows a picture of a white paste forming in their oil cap and you immediately think that means Mobil 1 makes crappy oil and it confirms your made up suspicions you have had because somewhere at some time you heard Mobil 1 had less thank 100% synthetic oil, but don't actually know if that's true.

I welcome everyone's thoughts, including yours. I didn't have this problem prior to switching to FS. I'm going to switch to a different brand and see of it persist. Once again thanks everyone for their input.

I just researched Mobil 1 on the web, it is not 100% synthetic it's a blend of synthetic and petroleum oil. Now I know it's true, and I knew it was true in the past.

I judged it by it's performance, it's breaking down and forming acids.

I drove my Tacoma about 7000 miles on it's last oil change in 14 months (I got lazy) with top of the line AmsOil 100% synthetic. The oil cap is perfectly clean no goo with about 75% of the mileage being short trips (less that 15 minutes).

All oils are much better than they were in the past, some are still better than others.

The most expensive oil is a bargain compared to an engine.

I don't think that any synthetic oil on the market today is true 100% pure synthetic. All have some percentage of dino blends, usually well under 1%.

My dad has used exclusively Mobil 1 in all his vehicles for the past 15 years and he's never had any goo. So just because you haven't doesn't mean it is all because of Mobil 1. There are a thousand other factors here that could have caused the problem. I think blaming Mobil 1 is a bit unprecedented.

AmsOil makes 100% synthetic oils. They also make part synthetic part petroleum oils, they call the ParaSynthetic.
