this is just my experience but with my old build it was on 37's and had a 5.29 third with crawl box and a supra motor in it. I would randomly break a cromo birf but never took out the HP third. having said that i know it's still very possible depending on terrain and driving style.

Throwing around some ideas before I replace the front differential in my 01 Tacoma.
Found a Straight axle out of a 79 FJ Cruiser for $200 bucks.
Does anyone have any input on why that axle would not work in an axle swap?

    Thanks

Generally anything is possible with enough cutting. :anonymous:

However, unless you change out your t-case as well, I don't think it'll work. Your OEM T-case is driver drop and pre-95 Toyotas are all passenger drop. I've heard of people 'flipping' axles, but I haven't looked into it.

Fjcruiser axles are waaaay too narrow for a tacoma. You want an axle out of an fj60/62. Flippings not bad, look up ZUKs yotatech swap and im doing an axle flip right now.

Saying that if i didnt have $3k+ dumped into my dual/lefty setup i would just run a pax drop case and leave it pax drop.

honestly if your going to Buy axles anyways I'd just say grab it and just order a custom housing for a 60/62 and axles to match the rest should just swap over.
In other news to get a rear two piece one ton drive line built just like the factory toyota shaft will cost like $1,200

Why would you get a 2 piece shaft? More stuff to fail, I've been using the OEM yota 1 piece shafts on my junk fer years and it holds up great. I get them for $50 at the junkyard.

Thanks for all of the Feedback.
Looking to take a pretty basic & cheap route. (as far as the axle goes)
Trying to determine what other, Year, makes, models or off wall axles I could use where they will line up with the passenger side T-case.

I will look up all of the suggested choices though. Sounds like a great starting place.
    Thanks again.

2-piece will keep it out of the rocks a bit more. I've considered it myself, but I think I'd have too much driveshaft slip with my link setup.

I assume you meant the driver's side t-case that you already have? Off the top of my head... other than flipping the axle, you'd be restricted to Ford D44/D60 or a custom housing.

You wouldn't need much slip if your carrier bearing was near the pivot point of the frame side link mounts. Then the driveshaft and links travel in similar arc's causing little slip change.

Not sure how much GC you'd save, when I swapped from a 2 piece to a single piece on mine it looks about the same. I'll have to compare to a stock one to see one day

Throw a dual case setup in the mix and one-piece DS clearance is damn near the same as single case/two-piece DS. Hell, duals eat up 8"-8.5" of the 12" section of the 2-piece amiright?

Clearance is a big difference from 1 to 2 piece. Not so much at the axle end but definitely at your belly. I drag my driveshaft everywhere even with my pinion rotated up at a crazy angle

Maybe that's what it is, I forgot the angle will be a little greater and keep it up out of the rocks with dual cases. I'll compare mine to a stock tacoma with a single case and stock driveshaft and post up some numbers when I get a chance. I've only ever hit my driveshaft down by the pinion

Haha nice. That was when I was 127". 1 piece for driveahaft hated life. Had a .250 wall DOM shaft made after that trip

I talked with jess at high angle driveline for an hour about 2 piece vs one piece. Basically it came down to keep the two piece if you can for clearence. U joints and yokes dont get much stronger than stock toyota, once you retube it they are stout as hell. Since i swapped in my 80 axle and its now offset and lower, i have dented the shit out of my driveshaft in 2 runs to the point where its like riding a sybian at speeds over 45. I wheeled 10yrs on the same trails and didnt do any damage previously. My advice is to keep the two piece, even with duals that shaft is still damn near 50"s on an extra cab.

yeah it has a lot to do with that also a rubber mounted carrier bearing moves meaning a 2 piece drive shaft is much more forgiving in the rocks than a 1 piece. also keep in mind my truck has nothing factory for the drive train so i cant just go pick up another one at the junkyard.
