Tacoma with some stuff melted to it
First person to suggest removing the foreign pieces before closing the hole!

Well since the OP said it still in there VVVVV

Then I would go ahead and remove the foreign object before you close the hole. A simple weld would work fine, almost any welder should be able to do this

Well first off you don't know what he hit, or how he hit it, how fast he was going, anything. Obviously the rear axle in a Tacoma doesn't really compare to one on a full size or bigger truck, however they aren't made out of paper and it's pretty hard to puncture steel. So that's a testament as to how big/solid this thing he hit must have been. Sure if Toyota in the future has problems with guys off-road and numerous reports of axles cracking or getting punctured, and they issue a recall on the axle then they will cover this axle. But if there is no design defects or manufacturing defects then they are going to say tough luck. I mean there's a possibility of having a dealer open a RO with the complaint and you state you don't think that this type of damage should occur and in the end it will make its way to Toyota, but giving the circumstances I don't see anything coming out of it. The dealer is gonna state it's due to damage that occurred while driving, Toyota will see the line and what the dealer did (which will be nothing unless you pay for replacement) and they will basically do nothing. Maybe if a few similar complaints come in then this will get flagged and then their engineering dept. will look into the complaints, but again the odds of this unlikely

My statements have nothing to do with whether or not Toyota will pick up the claim. My guess is they will not. I mean, just look at the rusted frames debacle. Or the Prius thing from years ago. LMAO! I'm simply stating that maybe the axles are not quite up to snuff. And considering it's a larger axle on the Off Road version, they might want to look into just how thin the axle walls are.
