Foam in the wheels. Worth it or not? Trim it, leave it, or remove it?

Plz tell me more. Looks nice, just needs a different body. Does Vaterra make good products, are parts easy to come by and is there good aftermarket?

If it's what came in the tire I'd cut it. Something like a 6 point star is easiest. Or get some Deuces Wild foams and be done.

That's interesting, never knew about that site.
The stock foams in the TH look just like the Double Deuce foams, dense inner ring and a softer outer ring.

I just tried one tire with no foam, sits good, but I'm worried about rolling the tire on the bead in a corner. The wheels are not vented so they seem to hold whatever air is in there.

I just double checked mine and they're CI foams.

I drill little holes in all my wheels that don't have any.

All the people I spoke to this weekend were running CI foams and pit bull tires except 1 who had CI foams and the TSL proline swampers

    I have a set of these DSC00638_907d69028179546f11dfdd85e1dbae3b27ff082b.jpg

I just need to find a set of good aluminum wheels wide enough to use these.

    so holes are good? :p

I saw talk somewhere about running no foams, my 2.2 Scorpion is foamless (i removed them long ago), they flex nice, wrinkle under torque, etc..

I'll trim these existing foams first, then maybe drill the wheels if I need more squish.

Foams and holes will allow the tire to grab around sharp edges better when crawling. For bashing I'm not sure.

This is what the kit came with, the foams were already in the tire so I never really looked at them until now. They look huge. Tire is stiff with them mounted.
I'm thinking of cutting half of the outer ring out, test first, then maybe do the star pattern.

That's the competition foam setup, also meant for the not-so-heavy rigs. The outer foam is softer and lets the tire grab rocks better. The inner foam keeps it from collapsing. Note that the outer foam is NOT waterproof, whereas the inner foam is.

One piece foams (also from CI) are meant for heavier rigs or trail rigs as they don't have that softer outer layer.

Personally, I wouldn't cut the foams in any way. If anything, try running without the outer foam to see if you like it.

I meant for the cheaper foams. Here's how I cut my 2.2 Mudslingers.

From what I gather they're quite good. Nothing has the aftermarket like Axial does, but the nice thing with the Vaterra is that it's a modular frame so you can lengthen and shorten it to accommodate a variety of bodies on a whim. Much better turn radius than the Axial's. Much much better. I just went Axial because I got a great deal on mine second hand.

I've been reading a lot about them since you got my attention last night. Very good looking rig and looks like it has a lot of hop-up parts that would be extras with the Axial. Definitely looking at one of these. Thanks!
