I've always done it, and been told that it's not only safer (older batteries can leak hydrogen, and grounding to the dead cars chassis minimizes any ignition chances) but it makes a better connection. A better return path for the good battery powering the car, more direct than going through the dead battery.

It's always worked for me when I've had to jump a car.

Yeah that's interesting. I understand the concept of it - I guess I had just never heard of that before.

The bolded part is incorrect unless you have a wiring problem. They are all electrically the same point. Therefore the term Common Ground.

I was taught years ago by my dad to go to the chassis ground on the dead car, it's the only way I'll never jump start a dead car by going directly to the negative terminal on the dead car

Had an experience with a new jeep owner I stopped to help a few weeks ago, said it just shuts down when he's driving it for no reason. I may have made an impression with my truck.

For anyone that owns a jeep or is a "Jeep Guy" you would know first order of business is to drop an optima or die hard platinum etc etc in there. Never have a starting issue ever.

It doesn't go through the dead battery. The positive electrons travel from positive to negative through the starter and other electrical components. The starter does not care where the negative cable is connected.

The most important thing is that both cable clamps, on both vehicles, get good solid bites on metal to minimize resistance in the circuit. The only reason to go to the body or engine for ground instead of the negative battery terminal is for safety due to sparks near the battery as stated earlier. Resistance (corrosion or loose connections) is bad for electrical systems. This is why it is important to keep your battery terminals serviced and free from corrosion.

Makes sense. It wouldn't matter where you connect the ground to, because it's in parallel either way. Got it! Thanks fellas! I'll be the first to admit electricity is magic in my eyes. I want to learn more though!

You and me both, brotherman. I'd rather replace a motor than re-do wiring. I hate electrical.

A 2004. Got a killer deal on it. It's in like MINT condition. Inside is perfect, outside looks like it's brand new. Only paid $4,800 for it at auction.
    We really like it.
