    I have a 1995 Toyota Tacoma, 3.4l, 4x4 extended cab. I just got a 02 Tacoma double cab pre runner, but its not 4x4. Would it work with the parts I have from my 95?

    Might be doable. Quite a bit of work tho. Is the '95 an automatic like your '02? Is the '02 a v6 like the '95?

    If the answer is yes to both of those questions, the job just got a lot easier.

    As long as your Fab Skills are up to speed !!

    It is quite embarrassing if the truck goes down the road sideways!!

    Since your doing this major project do you plan a Solid Axle swap as well??

    I'm not sure yet with the solid axle swap. The 95 has 3.4l and automatic trans. The 02 has the samething.

    I understand there may be some differences with the transmissions in the 2001 and 2002 years. May want to look into this before you tear into anything. Where are you located? I am contemplating this swap as well, but the transmission in my 2002 DoubleCab just took a dump. If I get cold feet, I will be looking for a 2wd trans...

    I live in Alabama. I have 2 extra transmissions with the transfer case attached for a 3.4l v6.

    Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
    If they are both V6's they are the same, but something about the automatic transmissions changed at some point between those years.

    Also OP the frames are different between those years so things may not line up properly without some drilling or fabricating as said above.

    I've been researching this a little bit, I was under the impression that the knuckles, CVs, front diff and drive shafts will all swap over. The speed sensor is definitely different on the 95 because that was cable driven at the time, I wonder if there isn't a provision for electronic speedo already there. I don't know how much they changed the frames though, so a trans/xfer mount may be something that needs to be fabbed, I haven't gotten that far in researching

    Everything will fit you'll just need a transmission out of an 01-04. Also if you want to keep abs you'll have to press the spindles

    I was under the impression that the 2003-2004 transmissions were different. I base this in part on the fact that they do not interchange according to car-part.com. Anyone know if that is correct or not?

    I would certainly defer to someone with first-hand experience, but the reading that I have done indicated that at some point, an electronic kick-down control was used. Information on this seems to be conflicting. I have read that this began in 2001, and I have read that it began in 2003. I have also read that the kick-down cable should not be present on those models with the electronic control. All of this is rather confusing to me, and I really cannot confirm it. Especially since both my 1998 4runner and my 2002 Tacoma BOTH have what I believe is this manual "kick-down cable" that runs from the throttle body down to the transmission on the driver's side. Which also may raise the question of whether the 4runner transmission were configured differently.

    What I can say is that the car-part.com interchange specifically singles out the 2001-2002 model year Tacomas from the rest of the years. I guess I am still unclear of what the difference is, but I would rather not take a $400-600 gamble on a transmission that may not work.

    Well well well let me input some thoughts that might be helpful a bit from 96-2004 all using the same tranny for the 4x4 models only 95s is different but remember 2001 ecu is the only 1 that will not go along (fit) with any other years in the 1st gen tacos.
    I'm an idiot good at breaking stuffs

    the mid-2003+ 3.4L V6 switched to a "drive-by-wire" type throttle body. the cruise and throttle were handled by the TPS/PPS instead of the cables. there is a motor on the bottom that controls how much the butterfly plate opens, thus no kick-down or cruise cable, everything was electronic/motorized.

    No clue what a detent cable is

    Sorry for not being clearredface_4209dd0c502afcaccf8c23c1e2b9721705e7e6f5.gif No detent cables were used after the following:
    Production period 08/00-> 4-Runner
    Production period 09/02-> Tacoma

    ...So I guess both the transmissions in question are w/ detent cable..

    I looked at the park/neutral P1 connectors and they are NOT the same so its not gonna be a straight swap. Not sure if the P/N switches can be swapped? Sorry I can't shed anymore light on this..

    What year connectors were you comparing?

    I believe the "detent cables" and "kickdown cables" may be referring to the same thing.

    See post #14 here: The long black cable is what I believe the terms refer to.

    As far as transmissions, you will not be able to get into the 03 or 04 as they went fully electronic. Up to 00 in the 4Runner. You will probably have to swap over the neutral safety switch as the connectors may be different from earlier 1st gens and for certain on the 4runners. I am running a 98 4Runner in my 02 Conversion and that is they only thing that I had to swap over.

    Are you saying that you did not have to swap your neutral safety switch on the 1998? You should be able to tell that by looking at it right?

    No, I had to put the 02 neutral safety switch on my 98 4Runner trans, the connectors were different but the switch is the same.
