I actually found Hurricane Creek trail last summer while visiting, kind of by accident, camped out there for a couple nights. I assumed it was legal, didn't have any problems.

So I spoke with the new ranger out there and yes it's legal. As long as you are on the main trail. All the side trails that folks have made are not legal.

Leave out of baxters and go straight, through the red light, the road will turn gravel, you will come to a train track, I jump my truck there all the time

And yeah plenty of places to do some light off roading, gravel roads such as wise mans view ect not 30mins from baxters

Yeah that a nice ride up there! I usually ride up 105 there's usually some good mud holes up there and a few side roads! I might ride up that road if it snows!!! Probably couldn't make it up the paved curve towards the top of the mountain!!!

Funny thing you mention the paved curves, our 4x4 club back in the early 80's did 105 in the ice and snow. What a fun ride. Put 60 miles on the odometer on a 18 mile road. We road the ditches to get up those ice cover paved turns. What great memories.

We got a few inches here near Charlotte with ice on top. Typical NC snow/Ice. Did have a Sleet Thunder Storm which was impressive. Schools out for another day, teachers only. trying to decide if I could use the KC Cyclone LED Lights.
