i literally just purchased an 04, while looking over the truck for the zillionth time i found a small hole in the frame above the leaf spring hanger. The truck was inspected and coated in 2012. If i take it to a dealer will they replace the frame for a hole this small?

if you have records of them inspecting and spraying the frame you have a good shot getting a new frame. they wouldn't waste time doing any repairs. and the '04 would be good until 2019 for warranty. there's probably a lot more rust than you can see as they all rust from the inside out :(

Random question but, has anyone tried to go to the dealer once the new frame comes in and just slathered it with POR15 before they installed it? Seems like it'd be a good idea to do while the frame is naked.

    Hey Kevin,

I really think it's at the dealers discression.
You just need to go in there and things moving.

    In a fair scenario,
    - if the truck was originally registered in a cold weather state when rolling off lot.
    - if the truck was brought in by owner for the Toyota frame inspection and rustproofing spray.
    - if the current frame on the truck is original and hasn't already been replaced.
    - if there are no cuts or alterations to the frame (not absolute).

-Then under the conditions of the TSB (it was never a recall) the dealer should replace your frame free of charge for materials and labor unless you decide to have them install aftermarket parts while they do the work. Things happen that change this policy but this has been recounted recounred time and time again by people that have had their frames swapped.

Even though you just bought it, the previous owner took it in and had the service done so the truck is still eligible for a frame regardless of the owner.

My truck is an 01, I bought it in 2013. The previous owner had it brought in and coated in 2012, and I found this hole in December last year.

My truck is currently with Toyota getting a new frame sometime in the next 4-6 months.

What's the point? The new frame will already be coated/painted and POR only really works on stuff that already has a little rust on it. Best bet and what I will be doing when my truck comes back with a new frame is spray the inside of the frame with a rust preventative and fluid film it yearly before winter.

Also, if the frame is perforated they will generally replace it. If it's been inspected and coated, they will likely tap the rust spot with a hammer, if it punctures the frame they should replace it. (Yours is already punctured so just don't take no for an answer if they try to brush you off)

Thanks yall! Dealer near me stated that because it was treated in 2012 that it would not get a new frame unless it had a massive hole. Called another dealer that is a few hours away but more than happy to look at it and replace the frame if needed.

Thank you guys again! Its good to be back in a tacoma

Any hole is a hole. Dealer took one look at my tiny hole and failed me right away. If a dealer is giving you a hard time on the replacement they will be even worse to deal with for loaners and stuff. Fuck a stealership like that. They have 0 out of pocket cost on these. Toyota corporate pays for your loaner and the hours to do the job. If anything they likely make money because the dealer gets reimbursed for 40 hours of work and a good dealership can get it done in 2 days. (Provided they have the parts)
