I dont understand wut ur saying......I have 2 mufflers to bring the note down..... but all that shit on the stock intake cant be helping airflow..... that big bend where the accordian looking rubber boot is cant be great...... thr internal silencing shit and extra chamber or 2 in the stocker cant be wonderful either..... its about noise and not performance.

My 98 came with CAI. I found the stock stuff and got better gas mileage and it felt like it took off better from a stop. That's my experience. Was pretty noisy if you like that sort of thing. I have a 1st gen CAI for sale!

OP, it's popular here to hate CAI and anything that says K&N. Good luck.

So there's a bunch of dirt in my 05 DCSB 4.0L engine that's had a K&N filter since I rolled it off the dealership 11 years ago and has not had any sign of engine malfunction to date?

I think I recovered the cost of the filter: $44 / 11 years = $4.00 per year. I'm shooting for at least another 11 years, so the annual cost of the K&N should be a about 2 bucks.

Yes. Nothing hard core though. And nothing in any dustbowl conditions similar to the pic in your sig.

why not? Just curious.... maybe u could prove some wrong.... or maybe not wrong.... just curious. I bought a k and n intake for temp testing and sold it long ago so I cannot do an oil analysis with that intake.... nor will I ever run one again.

$44 price tag was pulled off of Amazon a few minutes ago. Likely I bought it for a lot less 11 years ago because I'm cheap and probably clipped a coupon for it. So dollar cost per year is likely lower than my conservative calculation.

    Because I'm cheap.
And I'm saving up for a winch or retirement. Whichever comes first.

I'm waiting for my engine to die from excessive dirt intake so I can get a new Tacoma. I'll continue to use the K&N filter to accelerate the dying process. Hopefully, the engine will explode from dirt overdose before it hits another 11 years. Then I'll get a 4th Gen, or if I'm lucky, a 5th Gen Tacoma. Or by that time, with my luck, an electric wheelchair. And if the electric wheelchair needs an air filter, I'll definitely make sure I pick up a paper filter for it.

I suspect that if engines were failing at the catastrophic rate as suggested by the some on this forum, K&N would have been assaulted by the class action "ambulance chasers" long ago. Much ado about nothin' - I'm with you Subway, the sooner my K&N destroys the engine in my truck, the sooner I can get another one, otherwise I guess I'll have to drive it for the next dozen or so years (NOT). Ha!

much ado about nothin my rosy red ass

they are not failing at a catastrophic rate. god damn why don't people 'get it'.

was is happening is increasing oil losses from silicate wear over time and scoring of the cylinder walls/valve seats/rings over time.

IF you want to keep this thing 10+ years BAD idea for these filters which increase silicate uptake. it is not a guess it is a fact.

you cannot bore these engines they are far too thin walled. once you 'frig it up' after ~10 years of K&N it will be
permanently buggered and will consume oil far more than a stocker

note: none if this is perfectly absolute, except it is absolute that these K&N and other oiled
filter WILL increase silicate intake and WILL increase the interval in which MAF and throttle bodies
need to be cleaned.... it is FACT engine wear is increased by some factor, unless
you drive around in a clean room 100% of the time.

also cat converter lifetime shortened, a/f and o2 sensor lifetime shortened...etc...from ingesting more oily exhaust over time.
the changes are subtle but engine wear is about doubled when you allow particles in the engine far bigger than the stock paper filters allow.

if you pound around in the desert all the time with a K&N (by K&N I mean any oiled gauze filter or one claiming to -flow better-) , the engine wear will be incredibly drastic and age the holy living shit out of it

FWIW imho...K&N and the like are only good for race motors, ingesting dirt doesn't really matter as engines are somewhat disposable

No, what you don't get is, I GET IT - I just don't give a shit!! If it's as you say, it will be someone else's problem long after I dump the truck!
