Say you're looking at 4th gen 4Runners, 2006+... budget allows for pretty much any configuration... V8, V6, sport, limited, SR5.. etc.

Do you get the V8 just for the hell of it? Even if it's just going to be the Wife's DD / kid mover?

    Might ski, haven't decided.

I messaged him today. I am getting them made!

v8 is full time 4wd. The most HP was 2005, the new headlights were ~2006.

Absolutely yes! I LOVE my V8 in my tundra. Tons of power and so smooth. Sure the mileage isn't as great as the V6 (which is a great engine as well) but it's not much worse and I appreciate it every time I'm not hunting gears at the slightest incline. It just makes driving so much more enjoyable not having to deal with lack of power.

As for the rest of the options it just depends on what you are looking for. If it snows or you plan on going to snow in it, go with the Limited as it is full time AWD and will have the nice creature comforts your wife might appreciate. Plus the 18" limited wheels are some of my favorites. Plus the leather is so much easier to maintain with a kid and dogs as hair and stains don't stay in the leather like fabric does.

Yeah, I'm up to date on all the specs/configurations (see my last post on model years desired). Spent a few hours digging through all the stickies in the 4th gen section on t4r.org and all the toyota120 links that they point to....

It looks like 2005 was the highest rated HP, but the real difference boils down to VVTI versus non-VVTI in the earlier trucks. From what I read, the downward rating for power in the '06 and forward V8's was mainly a CARB thing. Either way, IIRC the rating on the '05 is greater by <10hp.

Full time 4wd would probably be better for my Wife anyway. She needs a tutorial on shifting the t-case on her 3rd gen every time it snows.

I took her to a dealership and she test drove an V8 limited and a V6 sport. She said the limited felt like, and I quote, "a race car". She liked the 6, too, said it felt quicker than the 6 in her 3rd gen.

She's anti-leather, but had a big smile on her face when she put the seat heaters on in the limited.

Yeah the HP went down about 10 from a 05 to 06, but I also read it's the same output, just a different way to test that produced a lower number. Not noticeable to anyone. My wife made me get a limited tundra and I'm happy she did. The leather, heated seats and DVD system is so nice to have.

Haha it really gets up and goes, even in my tundra with a shell and 33's. My parents 03 4Runner with the V6 is quick but my mom always felt my SC'd 3rd gen was quicker.

Trust me those seat warmers were heaven when we went to the snow.

I hear nothing but good things about the leather, and I think I'd even like the heated seats for winter driving.

My Wife said the same thing about the V6 4th gen, that it felt quicker than her '00, but not as fast as the '01 with the S/C, etc.

When I was in college I'd go to lunch with a girl whose parents had bought her a 4th gen with a supercharged 4.7. I'd ask her to punch it while we were driving around, and that thing was incredible. I had my Supra back then and to this day, I still think that 4Runner would have walked it.

The leather in the tundra is so much nicer than the 3rd gen. The 3rd gen has no support and very frail. Definitely a higher quality.

I might eventually try to add a sc as I plan to tow a wheeler, but we will see. I could only imagine how fast it would be. A man can dream.

That would be awesome, Rob. If anyone can find a deal on one of those things, it's you.

Problem is they never made them for vvti, so it requires extra parts to be made. I found one a month ago for $1500 complete, but didn't have the money at the time. Wish I could have snagged it just to hold onto.

You'll have to wait till I look at this from the comp. I got this phone about a week before my 4runner died so I don't have any good pics on here.

See, I knew you had it in you... you already found the deal and passed. Watch, you'll find one for under a grand.

So you can install one on a VVTI engine, but there's some custom fab'd parts involved? I'm curious about this because if I ever came across one and my Wife happened to have a V8 4th gen, I'd probably bust a move.

It took a lot not to pull the trigger but this one is supposed to be stock. In a year or so that may change.

This thread has a lot of info on fitting on.
