Man the Flames are exactly the same. Do you know who owns 90% of the season tickets? Business owners. They'll keep buying them up win or lose. On top of that it's not even the seats that generate the massive revenues. It's the right combination of big business sponsorship's, premium ticket packages sold to big businesses (like I've enjoyed through various companies as a regular Joe), and merchandising. The Leafs will always have that, and so will every Canadian team except maybe Ottawa and the two Albertan teams. To say TO is the only team with a over abundant loyalty problem is BS. The only reason the Flames almost folded was because they iced an AHL franchise for 10 years trying to rape every penny from a bankrupt oil industry. Even then 12,000 people commited to buying season tickets but that still wasn't enough to guarantee they would stay because industry wasn't sponsoring them after the pillaging that was done. The talent on the ice has nothing to do with whether people go to Flames games. All that matters is whether the Oil industry has enough money left to buy up the tickets and sponsor the team.

Anyways, TO did ice a competitive team for years. The formula didn't work out because management was stuck 10 years in the past but at least things were competitive for half of those years. I can't say the Flames have been terrible but the whole 2004 hangover was brutal to watch, just as bad as anything TO tried. Edmonton has been a fucking shit show except for the year Pronger carried them on his back. He wanted out of that dump though in one year and since then they can't seem to figure out dick all. I mean you can blame the current issues on whatever but, frick, every team is trying to do the same thing and to have that much talent and nothing to show for it is brutally painful.

Honestly I hate the way the Leafs were after the first lockout. The team sold off the future to try and go deep right before the lockout before Sudin ran out of gas and they failed miserably. Since then the teachers pension fund ownership didn't help either. In the last 5 years though, especially after Rogers and Bell bought out the team 3 years ago, I've seen a lot of positive changes. The same sort of changes that the Oil have to make here soon or they are going to have nothing but a new building. It's promising with some progress to see again on the ice and that's enough to keep me happy.

 

Although I agree with some of this I do know plenty of companies in Cowtown who have dumped tickets left and right and at least regular folks can get seasons if they want them here. I've been a season ticket holder for 5 years now in Calgary and I know folks out there in TO that still haven't seen a chance at them in 10.
Calgary Flames do enjoy a healthy amount of money from the patch but
We all know how Calgary makes their money and it's not tickets it's all that C of Red jersey sales. It's crazy how people buy new jerseys every bloody year.

And I agree with everything you say about Edmonton....amazing opportunities, tons of talent...no defense but fun to watch.

Leafs have sucked for a long time, even longer than the oilers. Not sure what you're mad about.

 

At the end of last year plenty of seasons tickets came up in TO. Just saying. Arguably the hardest season tickets to get would actually be Canadians. Good luck ever seeing a set of those if you move there.
