You people are ridiculous. The tacoma stops EXTEMELY FAST for a truck.
It does bother me that they are drums in the back but it doesn't really affect it much honestly. Most of the trucks stopping power comes from the front brakes anyways.

Oh and up to a point drums are better in the mud. They don't get mud and water and crap all over the stopping surface.....so long as they aren't completely submerged in water for a while. Then they will get water inside the drums and thats actually worse.

Quick google search reveals stopping distances of 121 ft to 125 feet depending on what cab/engine drivetrain you have. That is for a 60-0. That is EXTREMELY fast for a truck. Do a google search for 60-0 times on just about any car you want. An example I found was a 2007 honda accord that stopped in 127feet.

yes. the taco out accelerates the nissan even though the nissan has more power, and the taco stops faster than the nissan even though we have drums. these trucks stop fine, the brakes may feel softer than what i'm use to but if you get on them they stop the truck fast enough

    +1

    agree completely

I use to drive a 1990 325i and that thing stopped on a dime. it had 4 discs. but it was a BMW, not a truck. 4 Wheel discs would be nice but not needed. this is a truck not a sports car. dont drive it fast and be aware when you have weight in the back. its not a safety hazard

so would you rather have a truck with 4 disc brakes but the resale drops to half as soon as it leaves the lot and the truck starts to fall apart after 5 years. or would you rather have a truck that barely loses any resale, built like a tank and will last you a good portion of your life and have drums in the back? american trucks may not skimp on the brakes but they skimp on everything else, including engineering and quality control

exactly, thts what i've been saying. the brakes dont feel as stiff as other rides i've been in, but teh actual stopping power is fine. i'm happy with how fast i can stop when i need to

The Titan and Tundras have Rear Disks.

My old titan with the same 3500lb boat I have now would stop a lot faster with the disks than the taco with the drums...so go figure.

I had a frontier with 4 will disc brakes before I got my Taco. No way in hell that this taco stops quicker with 1000 lbs of shit in the bed then the Frontier. No FKN way, I have to drive a lot different with a full bed in the taco then I had to in the frontier. Empty bed I'm sure it's about the same, but I can really tell the difference with 1000 lbs in the bed. Go figure.

For what it's worth the trains I operate use drum brakes sorta.

Conventional drum brakes push the brake shoes out against the inside of a drum for the friction to stop the vehicle. This is oppisite of how train cars work. The rigging actually positions the brake shoes to clamp to the outside of the wheels directly for the required friction. Freight trains pushing 16,000 tons are stoped and controlled very effectively with this setup.

Passenger trains on the other hand use the equivilent of disk brakes. They are more fine tuned braking but not as efficient. They need more up keep, read cost for replacement parts.

Ever wonder why there are only about 12-15 cars max. on this passanger train setup while freight trains with 120+ cars and much more weight run on the drum brake principle? Eighteen wheelers the same goes. Doesn't matter if it's air or brake fluid that opperates the shoes or pads. Drum brakes are more efficient and cost effective for hauling heavy loads.

People we drive trucks intended to haul loads more than a car would normally handle. I'm only disappointed that Toyota is making it a hassle for adequate leaf springs, tailgates, ect. for this intended use. ;)

About time you chimed in Texas:) Beyond what you said-there's really nothing to say! Now I wonder if it's a BAD thing to have a truck w/discs all around!

From this and previous posts you have made, I would be lead to believe that you think the Tacoma is a piece of engineering perfection...

Is disc brakes too much to ask for????? yes / no? Your completely right about what your saying but your preaching to the choir and I think you missed the point I was trying to make.
