I'm going to be taking in my 2016 to get its 5000 mile service tomorrow morning. The dealer said they were going to Hook me up on my first oil change early and won't count against my 10,000 mile service. I've been reading a lot of threads on marking your Filter to make sure its been changed. Since the filter on a 2016 is a Canister type how would you guys recommend to mark it? My first thought was tape, but couldn't it come off with heat or just removed by the tech and never actually change it.

The 2016 V6 does not use canister type filter.

Idk since I don't have my truck yet, but how about some white out on spot where they would have to put a socket or wrench?

He isn't over thinking at all. The 2016 has a cartridge type filter that you can not "dent" "scratch" or "sharpie"

The outside is just a housing. You only change the inside filter element. Marking with a sharpie wouldn't make a difference since the cover is going back on.

I like the White Out idea. Place it where the wrench would go. Hopefully rubbing some of it off

Or change the oil yourself so you know it's done right. I don't let anybody touch my vehicles unless I have to. I guess I have trust issues after working in the car repair industry for 30 years.

If you have that much mistrust in your dealer you should find a new one.

I have always changed my own oil and look forward to doing it. I was offered it for free so I said why not. I trust the dealer would do it but I also like having insurance just in case.

Odds are that your dealer will do a fine job, but it's a good idea to double check the work.

I haven't got the the point where I need my oil changed yet and probably wont be there for awhile. Doesn't the canister unscrew off like a standard oil filter, just with you replacing the innards instead? If that's the case, can't you make a mark on the canister itself somewhere, like on the nipple so when they screw it back on you can tell if it was at least twisted off since the nipple will most likely be in a different position clockwise/counterclockwise?

Probably, but maybe not. Then again any system you attempt to use could be defeated by someone determined enough I guess.

I took my truck to a local dealer to check the transmission fluid. 7 hours later they returned my truck and said the fluid was at the proper level. I went under the truck and checked the ports (overflow, drain, and fill) and they were not even touched. They completely lied to me. Never trust any dealer! especially with warranty work. Always check.

What is it you're concerned about, exactly? It's a free oil change so the only thing you'd be wasting is time if they don't actually do it. You're technically not due for one until 10k anyway.

Most dealers have 19-20 y/o kids changing oil. Most are more busy thinking about girls or nursing a hangover than tightening your drain plug etc. I say either check their work or do it yourself.

When that 19 year old kid forgets to tighten your drain plug and your engine locks up on the highway after the plug fell out, not only will they cover your towing bill and your new engine, but they'll also give you a loaner. Do you think things are any better at Jiffy Lube?
