Wow, that is a clunk!

 

@mouse007 No updates yet. Gonna pull the skid plates and put my phone under the truck to get a video of my steering rack as I turn the wheels. I think that's the only way I'm gonna be able to tell if that's the culprit. The steering rack bushings are those 2 main bolts that hold the rack to the frame.

Mine is still primarily on the driver's side...I actually don't think I've heard it pop/clunk on the passenger side.

My 887s are coming UPS tomorrow, so hopefully I get some time to swap out the 886s this weekend. The 887s are 590# coils, so significantly softer than your Icons, but I have no weight up front.

The lower ball joints have been suggested to me, but both upper/lower ball joints look fine on my truck. "Fine" meaning they're not torn, cracked or leaking. But I think it could definitely be the cause of SOME noise. Can you get a pic of your leaking ball joint?

 

Hard to tell, there is only a small gap. I'll let you know when i finally pull them off.

I'm still planning to check my steering rack today. If it's not that, I'm hoping that reassembling the struts with the new coils in the next week or so will fix mine.

 

If it's not your rack then it's got to be your LCA bushings. Keep us updated

 

Will do. I have some 3 degree axle shims on their way from Toytec as well, so the rear end will be coming apart at some point and I can make sure everything's lined up and snug -- though nothing appears to be out of whack other than that rubber sleeve on the leaf pack retainer.

 

@jtweezy Yes, I'll snap a few pictures and post them up. I'm going to do the same on Saturday or Sunday, pull the skids off and see if the rack may be at fault.

My cluck is also mostly when cooler weather is out, and the truck hasn't been driven for a long time. So short, 15-20 minute drives. I can also make the noise happen and can also keep it from happening, this is why I think its my LCA..?

 

I actually only emailed it to the service manager, sales man and sales manager.

The reply I got back was, "not sure how this relates to your problem"

Do you get the clunk on starts and stops? How do you get it to clunk on demand?

What a joke response from them. "It doesn't relate to me problem...it IS my problem."

 

It's a when I tweak the frame. Either entering or exiting a sloped driveway for example, mainly turning right.

In the video I was creeping up a steep slope with the passenger wheel.

I wrote back to Toyota CC'ing everyone I could explaining exactly the history from when I bought it. Left truck for a total of 4 entire days there working on the issue.

No response for 3 days now.

 

Sounds like under torqued LCA cam bolts , I had the same noise

 

I'll see if I can get a wrench in there and give them 100#.

@jtweezy No, I haven't felt/heard the clunk under Stop & Go YET.

I can re-produce the clunk if I come into a right hand turn, that has a slight incline and the weight shifts to the passenger side. I hear it, and feel it on my passengers side floor board.

I need to be coming into the turn at maybe 5mph - 7mph to make the noies. If I go slower, it wont make the clunk or in my case fells more like if something is shifting and its a thud not a metal on metal sound...

I have a good friend who's a tech in Toyota, I hate to take it as they'll (Management) blame all the aftermarket parts on my truck. He said that it may be that the LCA ball joints aren't sated and the ball joint shifts under unload... Not sure, may sound like a potential culprit.. I may just take it in and see what he tells me..

 

Check the torque spec for them , I can't remember it off hand but I had that exact same type of noise with under torqued LCA cam bolts . You may be able to see witness marks if they have been moving around

 

It may be your coil spring... I have a very similar noise on mine. Toytec 3" with 5100's. I strapped a couple GoPro's on and traced it down to the coil spring moving on the top rubber cushion when compressing/decompressing. As the spring compresses it twists slightly. Because the bottom is sitting on a molded perch the only place for movement is at the top. My guess is that the coil twisted slightly during installation which is why there is no play for it. Im waiting till after winter to try to fix it (i live in Sask and its -30C) but take a look at that. I verified this by going over a few dips that cause the noise then carefully drove home and jacked it up. As the coil decompressed it made the same noise. This time while i was right beside it and was able to feel the coil.

Worth checking next time you're under there.

If you do take it in, let us know what they check/do. Sounds like the LCA ball joints could be the cause even if they're not ripped/torn/cracked/leaking?

4x4 takes 100ft-lbs on those LCA cam bolts. Per the torque spec guide stuck in the 2nd gen section.

I keep going back and forth between "it's the struts" and "it can't be the struts". This sounds like a possible cause. Hopefully reassembling my struts with the new coils will help. This time I'm going to relieve the coil spring by hand after torquing down the top nut, rather than using the impact wrench to quickly unscrew the compressor bolts.

 

Hi @jtweezy my lower ball joints aren't torn nor ripped.
looks like the lower part of the boot is slightly pulled up and the grease is leaking a bit.

I have torqued them, they are at spec and don't move at all.
Also done the typical ball joint test, pull on the tire/wheel top & bottom, it moves but very little you think this is normal..?

 

I'll try mine again, but last time I had the wheels up they didn't budge side-to-side (wheel bearings) or top-to-bottom (ball joint). I'll check if mine are leaking at all.
