I havent done research on it. Just thought about it driving home from work and figured it would be a good conversation to have with yall. Why wasn't there a 4.7 option? And would there have been enough room for it to fit?

Good question. Would like to know the answer myself.

Double cab Tacomas are close in size to gen 1 Tundras.

its been done.... sema taco a while back had the 4.7 in a 6 lug reg cab frame with an access cab body and a sb, it was pretty bad ass.

That stated id much rather have the 4.6L v8 out of the 2nd gen tundra.... more hp n torque than the 4.7

4.7 liter would be a blast in this truck. It would turn the Tacoma into a mini monster. I once owned a Dakota with a 4.7 and it had BALLS. Sounded great too with a flow master catback.

Oh that is bad ass :) And the reason I was think about the 4.7 was The 4runner has a 4.7 option so why didn't the tacoma? Haha They should of had about the same size engine bay, I would assume. But a 4.6 would be an interesting choice if it does get more hp and torque. And I guess the smarter choice too haha :p

But I think in the 4runner it was only one or two mpg difference 4.0 v6 and 4.7 v8. So I don't think people would complain too much :p plus if I was worried about mpg's I'd just buy a sedan.

My 1st gen tundra with a 4.7 got better mpg's than my 2011 tacoma 4.0 does.

This has been down a lot. there was a company about 5-6 years ago that dropped a 5.7 supercharged in a Taco, if I remember correctly, it had somewhere in the area of 500 hp. I bet that would be a blast to drive. Some guys use the Lexus V-8, the one from the car.
I have personally seen the crate 350 from G.M. in them. The ones with the 350's are usually cut up and hacked on a lot, at least the ones that I have seen. they are insane off-road though, i had a friend back in the late 90's that had one with a set 44's on a Gen 1.

I am sure they have some videos on YouTube of Tacoma's with V-8's

I guess if you have enough money to sink into it, you can stick anything up front to power your Taco.
As for as the towing is concerned, lets be honest if you have the money to drop in a v-8 and keep it street legal, why not just drop the money for a Ford Raptor, or a Chevy Reaper, or the Ram Runner?

I'd buy a 4.6 Tacoma tomorrow. Had that engine in a 2nd genTundra, got 18.5 mpg.

People equate engine size and power with low MPG but vehicle weight and aerodynamics play a much larger part. Example: my 3,700lb, 160hp 2.7L L4 Tacoma gets 20mpg average. My buddy's 3,100lb, 505hp 7.0L V8 Z06 gets...20mpg.

An underworked, powerful engine often gets as good or better than an overworked, weaker one.

I'd buy a 3rd Gen Taco tomorrow if they offered the 4.6 V8.

a LS motor is very capable of mid 20s MPG on the highway. Ive had multiple heavy bolt on/cammed/tuned LS motors, and all would knock down mid 20s on the higway. I understand being in a 3500-3800 lb car is different then a 4400 tacoma, but would still achieve 18-22 easy.

Our work van is a GMC 3500 extended van. Its 2wd and I would assume the GM 350 smallblock. On a highway trip I can get 20mpg's out of it no problem.

I'd be first in line for a V-8 Tacoma. The 4.slow is a joke... V-6 power with V-8 mileage.
