I sure hope Toyota comes out with some help soon for this problem, only 300+ miles and it's getting worse -

Got mine done today. Had an oil change earlier in the week and the service writer mentioned that a colleague had done the TSB on his 09 with good results, so they were familiar with it. Made an appointment for today, and the guy who started to help me asked "did we diagnose it or did you diagnose it yourself" like was I an idiot. I had already taken the head of the service dept for a ride some months earlier, and the guy who had scheduled me was there, so no further BS.

They flashed it, and it's much improved. Took about 90 minutes, most of which was them finding the right calibration to download.

I've gone through the situations where it would normally downshift excessively and it does seem to be fixed.

I agree with other, why the hell are they so resistant, making us demonstrate a known problem that afflicts the entire fleet.

Bottom line, this TSB is worth doing, it removes the one thing that was really irritating me about the truck. Now it drives like it ought to.

Just got it done today. Drove it straight home and already felt the difference. I took it in when I first bought it at the beginning of the year and they said everything was normal.

I've since put over 27,000 miles on my truck and everyday it bugged the crap out of me. It definitely took away some of the luster of enjoying a new truck. But on the bright side at least something was done about it!!!

2WD model here and just got the TSB today. Drove around for a few hours and really love the ride even more. instant shifting with no long drawn out revved up delays. Had the print out of the tsb in hand and there were no questions from the dealer..

Got my Transmission TSB done this morning. Drove it some 70 miles back to Kirkland and surrounding area. It seems to shift better and be more positive starting out from a stop.
Never have seen an actual copy of the TSB. I refereed to a short write up another did in this or another thread. Had no problems getting the dealer to do the work.

I have read a few comments where people with '10 models have been unsuccessful at getting this done. Has anyone had success with getting this fix on their '10?? What numbers, if we are pursuing this based on the current TSB out, need to be compared?

I have been suffering this problem since I bought my truck at the beginning of October, and just as the problem describes, it some sort of back shift which causes it to over throttle. I see the issue especially when trying to coast down a hill which I need to brake just a tad to slow down, but then I can feel a jerk and hard shift down which slows me down even further. The same issue happens at low speeds when I am coming up to a light, when applying the brake to come to a slow gradual stop, I can again feel it shift which actually speeds me up forcing me to brake harder. Its irritating, and definitely present in my '10 model.

You just have to go in to the dealer and ask. Have a copy of the TSB with you and make sure your VIN# matches.

This is what I did with the rear leaf TSB. It didn't cover '09's when I got it done, but I did my homework.

If it doesn't work call Toyota at their 1-800 number and get a claim #. Be the squeaky wheel!!!

This is a problem that I have, and is bad at a stop light if I look away to do something, and the next I know, I've damn near run into the back of the rig in front of me. I don't let me wife drive the rig because of this issue, as I fear she won't catch herself. I may have missed this in the thread, but why does this happen and does this TSB fix this?

Yes, if you have an 09, this fixes the problem. When you slow and accelerate, the engine revs and then engages, causing the car to lurch forward. The TSB fixes this problem. Someone posted the actual TSB somewhere in this thread. It takeas about 30 minutes abd you will love the way it shifts afterwards (like it was suppose to)

I had the fix for tranny lag done today and completely agree... I cannot make it lag or stutter any longer and I also noticed that coasting downhill between 40-50 mph I no longer get the noticeable engine braking that I had before. I'd heard that was because the injectors were shutting off but I have no way to verify that. I'll keep an eye on my gas mileage over the next couple of tanks to see if it has any effect on the MPGs.

Dont mean to stray from topic but, your getting 22mpg and worried about it going down?

My taco is currently getting around 14.8mpg. I have been told that as the vehicle is driven more it should increase as it adapts to my driving and breaks in. I bought it was 25 miles on it going on 2 months now. Before this thread I was wondering if this issue was effecting the mpg in anyway since I could see it rev up erratically in these instances.

Called my stealership today since I just saw this thread over the weekend. . .

As a prequel to this call I've politely asked each time I've been at the dealership if there was any update for the transmission. I've discussed it with the service manager, and the girl who's always at the front counter on several occasions. I've never bugged them, and the conversation has always been polite with them acknowledging the issue and saying there will probably eventually be a fix.

In fact, shortly after buying the truck I started describing the problem and they cut me off and finished my description saying, "yep, we know about it. . there's no sense us looking at it. It's a known issue, but there's no fix yet".

    That was back in June.

I call today and very politely stated that I have an 09 Tacoma and I've got the issue with the transmission where it's not smooth at all under 20mph, and shifts to 1st too early. I then went on to say I'm aware there's now a TSB for reflash of the transmission, and I'd like to schedule a time to bring it in and have it updated.

The girl got insta-bitchy and said there's no "recall" or anything and I do not need to bring it in. I responded that I know it's not a "recall", but I've made them aware of this issue from the first week I owned the truck and it was acknowledged by her and the service manager (I even used the service manager's first name), and now there's an "update" that addresses it.

She tells me that it doesn't fix it, that at best it's a "little better". I replied well "better is better". . .

Still not defeated, she tells me I can bring it in but I'll need to stay and reproduce the problem for a technician.

I think it's fucking awesome that when there is no fix they're willing to stand next to me saying yeah boy that sucks. . we know about it. . we hate it too. . and eventually toyota will have a reflash. Now that there IS a fix they treat me like I'm infected with the black fucking plague!

I've bought 3 vehicles from this dealership. I prefer another dealership in the area, but every time I want to buy, the other dealership never has what I want.

So. . since apparently I'll need to re-produce the problem repeatedly for the tech, even though it's a KNOWN, ACKNOWLEDGED issue. . can someone suggest how to reliably make it happen? I've noticed it the most when I decelerate to around 12-15mph and get back on the throttle, but it doesn't seem to happen every time. Does anyone have a recipe for guaranteed problem replication?

Also, for my own reference, I took the existing JPG's from alldata and put them together in a single PDF doc. It's no replacement for a "real" PDF with clean text, but in the interim until one is released, it's convenient:

    Hi Rich,

I found that I could allways duplicate the problem when making a turn, I don't know why but left turns are worse.
If you slow down to 15 mph and then when halfway into the turn start to accelerate it should screw up, mine allways did.

FWIW, my dealer rep said the lurch is a drive-by-wire throttle glitch and they are still working on it. I haven't noticed it happening since I had the TSB done, will report back if I see it again.

It may be that there are separate issues at play, but likely the less-than-stellar shift program could have been making the other problem more apparent/pronounced.

I'll be sure to reply back with my thoughts IF the dealer actually does it for me. . .
