I'd agree old trucks are better/cooler than new...but rust will consume my truck long before it gets to that type of pedigree.

Why are those numbers so surprising? I have a '91 f150 with over 300,000 miles on it. If you take care of a vehicle, it'll last.

I have a friend that just bought a 2000 F150 with 280k miles on it and I swear it's a ticking time bomb but he says he hasn't had a problem with it so far (4 months), other than the access cab doors shaking when off-roading. But I think that's normal. It makes me question my Toyota because I've had problems nonstop.

Before my Tacoma I had a 1999 Silverado 1500. Ext cab step side bed. 1 1/2 inch leveling/lift. When I bought it in late 2014 it had 86k miles on it. Had been babied and dealership maintained by an elderly gentleman all its life. I decided to keep it moderately stock. Just the lift. Bigger tires kept the stock rims I liked em. I had got her up to 90k and the old man (whom with I attended church) asked me if I was planning to sell it soon. I told him no, later on I started having to drive longer distances for work. I called the elderly man. He still wanted it back (over the 2014 he bought to replace it) so I sold it back and started my hunt for a truck that would get decent gas mileage thus the xrunner came forth. I cant say I miss that gas hog.

Tacoma? Decent gas mileage? Are we talking about the same truck here?

I've got a lowered 06 xrunner with the 4.0 V6 and a six speed manual. Doing the math at the pump running 93 octane matches up with my obd2 gauges right at 25-26 on the interstate going 80-85 and 17-18 in town. Now I've dropped it to 13 keeping my foot in it. But I think being low and having that 6 speed manual really keeps the fuel consumption down. I've got a buddy with a 2014 4x4 with the same 4.0 that gets 17-19 everywhere. I feel for y'all in the 4x4s. Think about the fact I drove a 99 Z71 with a 5.3 V8 and 35s it got about 8-9 mpg interstate and worse in town.

Actually, a nice article. Surely....I love my tacoma. I could keep my tacoma forever and have no doubts it would last that long (coughframecough).

At my age, you spend all your life busting ass to work to have nice (new) things in life. It's time for something new. Someone else can enjoy my truck for the next 10 years. :) I'm just not sure what I'll end up with yet. :)

I'd be wary of buying anything close to 100,000 unless I had a detailed service record from a trusted source. I've had my Ford since 2000, with the only major issue being a transmission rebuild at 200,000, so I guess it's proven itself reliable.

If you truly take care of a vehicle and don't freak out when stuff breaks like many do you can keep just about any vehicle going as long as you want. Depending on the vehicle and your tolerance to problems quite often the costs to keep something going are just way too steep. Which is why I am SO glad I no longer own any BMW's. They are ridiculous in regards to upkeep. I take really good care of my stuff and expect my current truck to go at least to 300k miles. I'm at 162k now. My Mustang should be able to do the same also. But if I get bored and have the means I could replace either of them at any time. As much as I like them they are only vehicles. They can come and go.
