They are stating that outside sources caused the failure, therefor they are not responsible for the fix. Only thing I don't get is that if the cause was dirt/water then it should have effect more cylinders and certainly not just the 4th cylinder. If dirt did enter the engine...it would not be much and very fine dust particles at that. There are far worse cases of water/dirt entering the engine with little to no issues occurring.

I have a borescope I can send down the spark plug hole to look into the cylinder. That should tell me if dirt was there.

 

hsi build page, name changed to like tron but its rinzlers build page. Basically that weekedn they gutted his truck and sold everything off and welded on some shit junkyard springs then insuracne totalled it. pretty crazy transformation in a few days

I agree with this. They are using the mods you've done as an excuse to avoid having to fix this under warranty without any proof of the cause of the problem.

It will be interesting to see what the borescope shows. It may be more than I little bit of dirt. It may have been a larger piece of debris. Then the question becomes how did it get past the air filter. A gouge in the cylinder wall would indicate more than just a little dirt got in there.

 

That's complete BS. Have you taken this issue up with the service manager or the general manager of the dealership? You're engine is still pretty low mileage for something like rings to be affected from dirt. Many of the owners/managers of dealerships don't look into the day to day stuff like the service department's doings (my father was a dealer consultant for a while) so it may behoove you to make contact with these individuals or take it to another dealer.

 

I'll stop in tomorrow after I get the truck back. Pretty sure the service manager was the one speaking to me from the start. I know the dealership was just bought out and probably would like a good start with their customers. I'll work my way up to the owner.

 

As much dirt was in the intake tract, it wouldnt surprise me that it made it down into the cylinder.

My insurance will pay out so long as its not a timed event or race. Looked into it because of track days.

Why would they pay to repair it if it wasnt their fault? Thats a lot of lost revenue if they did that.

Honestly gage, i would just fix it yourself. Youve put the truck in a position with mods that they will argue its been "abused" and has led to the dirt consumption. While its a bitch move, just also part of modding a truck under warranty and offroading it imo.

Had the same thing happen when i took it in for the 4x4 actuator on the front diff. They "couldnt find" anything wrong, which i know they didnt even bother trying to look. And purposefully put the truck had offroad modifications and looks to be used offroad on the report. Said fuck the warranty and ill replace it myself. I know it also comes down to the dealer themselves, but i think youd be hard pressed to get a replacement without a lot of court time.

 

I am going to try regardless and fully understand that I am going to likely be repairing it myself. Trying is free so why not. I understand that modding a vehicle and offroading comes at a cost. The bore scope should answer some questions I have. I'll take pictures if I can find the cause and take it to the dealer as "proof".

 

What's your repair plan? Find a used running 2tr to make a quick swap? Send the block off to get honed and replace piston ring? Just replace rings?

A lot of options when going this route.

The other thing I don't get is even if dirt gets into the intake, the filter should stop it from entering the motor to begin with.

Get better guys! May go an look at picking up an 89 4runner near you in Idaho Ben. Gotta decide if it's worth the effort.

 

Could be, apparently it runs decent just needs a water pump because the bearing is toast. I'm in the fence about it.

 

I love 1st gen runners. I want one.

Make sure you go over it closely. People a use those things. Not just like wheeling. But oil changes and such. A lot. Also rust on the body is always a problem.

 

I love them too, this one has a bit of rear quarter panel rust but nothing some cutting couldn't solve. But yah I hear you on the drivetrains. This one is a 5-speed but has the Debbie downer of Toyota engines. The infamous 3VZ-E. they say it runs good right now other than the water pump though.
