Don't step in a heavy truck shop. All the techs and drivers I know hate Cummins. Cat FTW

Really? The Cummins were more revered than the 7.3 liter International diesel in Ford F-350s which I heard were stout engines. I am not certain about Cummins in semis, but in the old Dodge Pickups, they were known for durability and mileage.

Overseas, Toyota used diesels were always known for durability more than overall power, but they can't meet US emissions. Even Mercedes diesels in the US use what urea or some spray. After VW's diesel issues, it is a wonder the Duramax is said to make good power with good mileage with legal emissions. I hope Chevy turned the page, but I will not buy a Chevy when a known quality like the Tacoma exists with legendary credentials

That could be. I see many International diesels. My half-brother drives longhaul, but I am not certain what he drives. But the reputation of Cummins for lesser trucks is stout. I know Toyota wanted to in-house their own diesel, but had problems meeting emissions and the R&D was expensive, especially when they prefer hybrids and fuel cell technology over diesels.

Put a decent diesel in the Tacoma, and the game is over for all other trucks, period. I see Ford in bringing back the Ranger, might as well let dead dogs lie.

Its happening in the Tundra, so why won't Toyota put the same diesel in their trucks as Nissan, especially since Chevy has a diesel coming?

VW killed the passenger car/small truck diesel market. The amount of emissions equipment will kill the reliability

I'll see the Colorado diesel first. Diesels can be emission legal in most states with only a slight HP sacrifice. Nissan confirmed their diesel is coming and so there a multiple engines. Chevy needs a win against Ford, and Nissan needs a win period. I think they do put in work this time.

Again, you completely missed what I said. I didn't say HP, I said reliable. The EGR systems, EGR cooler, SCR, catalyst, etc have always been the most unreliable aspects of modern Diesel engines.

I see. Mercedes had a really reliable diesel in the 1980s. I wonder what components they used. They lasted forever.

There were very minimal emissions standards in the 80's on diesel engines

Does the OP realize that official mileage figures for the 4 are less than the 6 in Tacomas. Not much reason to go there. I've put 350,000 miles on Toyota 6's with only 1 alternator replacement.

I have had 3 different 4 cyl trucks, two old nissans which were amazing trucks compared to modern nissans, and my 02 Tacoma 4wd 5sp. I have hauled more weight in these trucks than many people do in their full size trucks so if you're willing to go slow, a 4 cyl isn't so bad. But now I need a double cab for all the kids Ive got and the v6 would help me at highway speeds when I'm hauling weight. Besides that the mpg is only a small difference now.

I trust the 4 cylinders more, and it seems I will have to get the 6 cylinder if I want the double cab 4x4 Sport. The new rumored 2018 4 has 180hp, but that is a rumor and far off.

I had a 4 cyl 5 spd manual 4x4 regular cab and averaged 20 MPG. My friend has averaged 4cyl auto Prerunner DCSB and averages 23 MPG. Like most are saying though, they're acceleration pigs and when you have a little weight in the bed or behind you on a trailer, you know it big time. With that being said, the 6 cyl trucks average around 16 MPG and for that little difference I wish i would've gone for a 6 cyl.
