Looking for good 3" lift

    I have just bought a 2004 prerunner and was wanting to add 3 inches under it. I was looking for some advice on which direction i should go under 300 dollars. I will not be offroading in it. I want it just for looks.

    www.toytech.com has a ton of different lift options. I'm in the same boat as you, mainly want a lift for looks and on a budget. I believe there's one there that has spacers or coils up front and an AAL in the back in your price range.

    I want to add a few inches, and on a major budget. Still saving for my tires which should be just around the first of the year. Going to get 32", so I "may" need to do the lift.

    spacer lift. The best spacer lift is the type of spacer that goes on top of the stock coilover. Dont use a spacer that goes between the spring and top plate. PITA to install. Ive got the procomp spacers and i maintained stock ride. Procomp spacer and readylift are exactly the same and are good choices for a tight budget.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Check out the Bilstien 5100's. You can get a front and rear set for under 300 bucks from Downsouth motor sports. They will give about 2.5" lift up front, and you can get an AAL for the rear.

    when adjusting the billies to 2.5" do you lose any down travel? with a top plate spacer you still maintain 4up 4down stock travel.

    With any lift, (except long travle) you loose down travle. The top plate spacers are bad, as the extend the length of the assembly, and can cause the ball joints to wear excessivly, and shocks to break when hitting a large bump. They do NOT keep the "4 up/4down" stock travel, as the bump stop limits up travel, and the ball joint limits down travel.

    Chris, would the stock springs be okay with billies on all four corners at 2.5"? Would there be a need for uca's?

    So with the billies or SAWs or king shock, the shock limits the down travel rather than the balljoints?

    EDIT: I have to respectfully disagree. I have a 2.25" spacer and when installing it i had to jack up the lca to get the top nuts on the co started. once the co with spacer was in place i had no problem pulling the uca down and tightening nut on the bottom and the joint had room for more down travel but i believe the shock limited down travel. The SAWs are about 2.5" longer than stock shocks (overall) and do not require ucas from what i can remember

    The Ball joints are the end limiting factor. If useing extended shocks, you need to use an UCA that allows for more travle. The OEM shocks limit the travle to a limit near the end of the ball joint travel. Anything longer, damages the ball joint. By useing a Top plate spacer, you are efectivley makeing the shock assembly longer, thus when extending, its doing so against the ball joint. When this happens, the ball joint is damaged, and if the ball joint stops the shock abruptly enough, this will happen:

    Thats why, if useing a shock capable of more travel than OEM, you really should consider upgrading UCA's.

    Ok that make sense. I was under the impression that the 5100s were extended travel shocks...making them no different than cos or top spacer

    Nope. They are OEM replacements. What sets them apart, is they are larger in diameter than the OEM, and valved better for a preloaded spring rate, or heavier spring rate from an after market coil.

    I really appreciate the info and im sure this can deff help the OP.

    I will be swapping the spacer out for either billies or maybe spend the money to upgrade to SAW COs and Total Chaos UCAs to do a mid travel but more for offroading flex (rock crawling) rather than hauling across the desert

    When u add the shocks does that give you your height or do u have to put the spacers and AAL on there also?

    The shocks have 4 settings for the spring seat. So 4 lift options. 0", .85", 1.75", and 2.5". For the rear, you would need an AAL.

    Im guessing this option would give me a better ride vs putting spacers in the front and blocks or shackles in the back?
