    The better coast
    fun facts:

gross vehicle weight of a 2nd gen 4cyl 4x4 reg cab and a dscb 4 cyl is a 150lb difference. nothing that going to make a noticeable difference.

3rd gen 4cyl dc is 500lbs more than a 2nd gen 4cyl reg cab 4x4 and the 3rd gen comes with a 6speed compared to the 2nd gen 4 speed.

2016 dcsb 4 cylinder should carry its weight fine.

It depends on desires. My 4 cylinder Camry felt smooth. My V6 Camry feels like a sports car relatively speaking, but I prefer the 4 driving around.

I agree, but vehicles are getting heavier. The Tacoma isn't growing dimensionally, but its gotten beefier. Need to use high strength steel. Its stronger, lighter, only marginally more expensive, and resists rust much better. Toyota's only weakness is the have a reputation for rust.

Some of the reason they must get heavier is because other vehicles are getting heavier. Its a self-fulfilling cycle.

That is a great deal of weight for where its located. Its not centered weight, but its in the front, the worse place in truck physics. I wish they had a 2.0 liter turbo 4.

You lost me at "my V6 Camry felt like a sports car" it's a Camry.....

But OP, this has been beaten worse than a dead horse here, so I'll reiterate, it's a truck, pony up and get the 6. The TRD models only come as a V6 there is no way of making it a 4 unless you drop a 4 in; in your driveway.
The 6 has decent mileage plus the extra power when needed. You stated you drive all highway, so let me ask you this, why a truck? If you drive all highway, and don't use a truck for truck stuff, why are you even bothering with a truck? Why not just keep your "race car Camry"?

Even when diesel excursions were for sale, they didn't fare to well in crash tests and some of the smaller cars performed much better. A lot of the weight is coming from new features that a lot of people are demanding.
And you don't think a turbo set up is going to add a bunch of weight, especially one from a factory that has to meet all the emissions requirements?

Had a '12 Sienna with the 2.7L. It was a fine vehicle but god awful slow. Couldn't pass a thing. It was almost dangerous. That's why as soon as I was even (equity wise) I traded it in on a '15 SE. I would not recommend a weak 4 cylinder in any heavy vehicle. There's a reason Toyota quit offering the 2.7L in the Sienna for '13. The Tacoma DCSB is likely heavier than my van was.

There's a member on here with over 400k on a 2006 v6. Go check it out. The entire list of repairs is posted as well. The truck is mostly still all original.

Maybe some of you haven't been around long enough to remember Toyota used to offer their trucks & 4runners with an engine up until 1995 called the 22RE (2.4 Liter 4 cylinder). The 22RE had 116 HP and 140 ft-lbs of torque in a truck and SUV that weighed about as much as the current Tacoma. Toyota's reputation to this day for reliability in trucks & SUV's was built on the back of the 22RE engine. The 2TR 2.7 liter 4 cylinder is a rocket compared to the 22RE. It has several advantages in a vehicle that weighs about the same - more power & torque obviously. More technology which make the torque come on earlier due to a flatter torque curve thanks to VVT-i & Dual overhead cams. More transmission gears (6 speed in the auto vs 4 in the old 22RE - both had 5 speed manuals). Even the 3.0 3vze V6, which was the flagship optional V6 engine in Toyota trucks & 4runners from 88 to 95 had less power & torque than the current 4 cylinder (150 HP, 180 TQ). So when you start whining about this engine having low power - you're forgetting why a lot of people buy Toyota's.

Opted for 4 cylinders exclusively before upping to 6 on my DCLB Prerunner. Bought it when gas was $4 gallon, which only stung until I pushed the accelerator the first time. This midsized truck is BIG and LONG. But with the V6 it takes off like a rocket. Now that gas is approaching $2 a gallon in usually high priced SoCal it's even more of a no brainer. Go with a 6!!!

There's a 600 pound difference between the models from 95 to today and a bigger gap bap to the 89 model.

I found what the OP is looking for. Weighs less than a 2nd gen. Better center of gravity. 4 banger with good mpgs, and similar configuration as a DSCB.

That's about what I figured. Was thinking somewhere near 100.

Every time the tank is filled it's going to be a different amount, so that's a bad measurement to go by. I also rarely go below a 1/3 of a tank.

Daily driving in the summer I average about 19 MPG (mostly suburban or hilly rural roads). Highway varies depending on speed, but if I keep it at or under 65 I can do 20-21 MPG pretty easily, best ever was just under 24. On faster highways (like rural Maine where the speed limit is 75), it tanks and I get 15.

My 6cyl double cab '14 gets better mileage on the highway than my 4cyl access cab '12. FYI
