Here I am, ashamed and returning again to the shrine of Tacoma. I've been driving a Jeep for the past couple of years and missing having a bed and being able to drive on a highway without white knuckles. I'm looking at the 2016 (which has grown on me) and considering the options I'm interested in... hopefully you guys can answer a few questions.

I'm quite set on the DCSB TRD OR and going back and forth between Quicksand vs Magnetic Grey Metallic, but that's my own decision. I'm also trying to decide if I really want the Premium/Tech kit along with the tow package. Really the biggest questions are for those of you that got the manual transmission. There are a handful of new transmission specific features and I'm curious if they're still available on the stick. My questions...
    • Do you still have access to the Multi-terrain select?
      • Does it work ok with a stick?
    • They say there are 2 new transmissions... are there changes to the manual, or are they both automatic transmission changes?
    • Do you find you get the missing power back when you have control over the transmissions?
I sure wish I could split up that premium/tech package... it has some stuff I want, some stuff I don't. I would also like to find a good dealer that is known to do well thought out upgrades without charging a premium. Pollard Jeep in Boulder is great about having onsite upgrades for their Wranglers... I'm curious if there is a particularly awesome Toyota shop in Colorado that might be similar.

    Thanks!

    I'll tackle the "power question"
    • Do you find you get the missing power back when you have control over the transmissions?
it's sluggish and not very responsive for the first 1k miles or so until the transmission learns, then it's more that sufficient. As for the rest I will leave it up to the forum.

Wholly disagree with this. The power really has not changed any tangible amount since I have taken delivery of my truck and I have almost 3,000mi on mine. People are just "getting used" to their ride. I notice a huge difference when I hop back into my lady's 4.0L powered 2016 4Runner.

I imagine after I pay off the truck I'll be re-visiting the Jeep needs... but it'll be fun-sized like a TJ or maybe LJ. Fun weekend fun without ever having to drive it far.

Thanks for sharing the picture, I just shared it with my wife and she's less than thrilled by the color (and the more on-board she is the better my odds are of perks & features.) I'll keep looking though.

Any new car I've owned has seen a change in behavior after the break in period... I won't expect a ton, and expect having control of shifting will give me more take off power than relying on the auto.

I think I'm leaning toward the basic TRD OR with towing, the tech/premium is a bunch of stuff I don't need and if I get a stick I'm sitting closer to $33k which gives me play money if I want to add things later. (like the lift/wheels/tire that'll be necessary ;))

That being said, it's still unclear if you're losing terrain select in a stick. I think I just read that to be the case... so TRD OR is seeming less valuable and I should get an SR5 and add a locker + an aftermarket bilstein lift all for less than the TRD OR.

I didn't say she's picking it, just more pliable when she feels like she's got some input. ;)

Choose the inferno man...She will love it..!

Actually, I have the auto tranny and I'm ok with it... actually getting real used to it now...!!

Got 26.5 MPG Canadian the other day..!! Whoopee.

You gotta have the tow pkg....useless without it man.. must have...

I got the PT and upgrade pkg. (I did not want the moon roof pkg. but it was on there and dealer knocked off some $)... the other stuff like BSM and Phone charger are all crap to me.... wish I could have chose what I wanted... but that don't happen in the real world...

    Have fun...

There is no Multi Terrain Select or Crawl Control with the manual trans, instead you get A-TRAC. I got the P&T package simply because my wife put her foot down and said she was done travelling in vehicles without dual zone climate and heated seats. I could give two shits either way, but I can afford it and she's happy so whatever. As to buying SR5 and adding locker yourself, if you go slushbox that makes sense to me, but if you want a manual it's not going to happen, you're stuck with TRD OR DCSB, TRD Sport AC and DCSB, and SR AC I-4 as your only manual transmission options (unless Canada).

EDIT - Under no circumstances should you skip out on the tow package. It both adds value and functionality, the upgrade in cooling and alternator alone makes it worthwhile.

I'm picking up my TRD OR DCSB with tow pkg. prem/tech and JBL tomorrow and it's in quicksand. I have to say it's a great color and if you haven't seen one in person you should as IMO it looks sooooo much nicer up close. My first Tacoma as well as my first new anything and at my age thought i might as well go full boat. Good luck and hope you get what you want..!!

my wife hates the Inferno color......so I purchased just that. Ensuring she will never even want to drive it.

Hmm, so I guess the SR5 is off the table. I actually just spotted a TRD OR with all the everything and manual for 2k off if I take the black one. I don't want a black one. Curse Toyota for having so many other good color options. I'm also now on the fence about going stick... I kinda like the terrain select.

Yah, I'm really not interested in Black. I go back and forth on Inferno... I liked it on the TRD Pro and it's still charming, but its really not showing up on lots here in Colorado. I've found a couple of Quicksand models that match my needs so far, more than I've seen in Inferno. Black is really going to be a last resort but if they get me the price I want then I might consider it.

Look at it this way...you might be THE only one with an inferno in your area (like me)..., or your state...!!

I'm going to swing by the local dealership tomorrow by my office, they have an Inferno with a stick and an automatic Quicksand (according to their site.) I'll give them both a try and see how they look in person.

You'll love the Inferno... It changes color, depending on the lighting... Dull orange sometimes... awesome red/orange in sunlight ... Cool color my man...:canada:

My son likes the Inferno. Haven't shown the wife that one yet. I know that many on here seem to think nobody gets an opinion but the driver... but that's just not how I roll.

I think my Jeep is jealous, or I'm getting signs. 18k miles on the Jeep without a problem... then yesterday on the way to a closed Toyota car lot to see if I could find a Quicksand vehicle my check engine light came on. I suppose I need to deal with that before selling/trading in.

Yah, I'm sold on the Quicksand so that's what I'll be pursuing. Next trick, finding a place that has what I want in stock vs ordering it. I've never done a specific order for a vehicle, does that pretty much guarantee a higher price? Any tips for how you got the best deal on your truck?
