Most freeways are 65 and 70 is our top speed limit.

If you want to drive faster and get good gas mileage, you should not have bought a 3.5 litre v6

    Question...

When people say 50/50 (city/highway), how are you guys justifying this?....time? mileage?...guessing? I would assume that the majority of this so called 50/50 is pretty arbitrary. If it was true 50/50....based on mileage. We would see significantly worse mpg than the numbers posted in this thread.

I seem to average around 15 to 16 mpg. My commute to work is roughly 2-3 miles city and 12 miles highway, round trip. The amount of congestion on the highways vary quite a bit so it is difficult to get an accurate assessment.

My best average is around 18.4 mpg, when the majority of my commute is on open highway. I was also consciously trying to keep my rpms below or around 3k, while accelerating. Essentially I was holding up some traffic...aka driving like a grandma.

The most accurate way that I can describe the fuel efficiency of the new tacoma is that it is possible to get decent mileage...but you need to make conscious effort to do so. Atleast for me, as I tend to drive faster than average. If you, in anyway hit the meat of the powerband...you're numbers are not going to be very impressive.

My truck is a double cab TRD OR 4x4, running 91 octane fuel. Bone stock.

Exactly ...better gas mileage is attainable in the 3rd gen but it isn't practical to drive like a blue hair and it certainly doesn't come naturally. You have to feather the throttle

Driving 80+ when the speed limit is 70 is just as dangerous and over 80 is close to the limit of the ability of a lot of drivers. They can do it when nothing goes wrong but when something out of the ordinary happens things can go sideways in a hurray. If you want good gas mileage then a truck was a poor purchase choice. The trucks are not geared for low gas mileage and the shape of trucks doesn't help much either. If I had the commute some of you folks do the Tacoma would be the last vehicle I would be buying.

    where did anyone suggest speeding?
I didn't buy a truck for better gas mileage (and most Tacoma buyers likely did not) BUT the emphasis in marketing their product on improved fuel economy by Toyota is a sham. This has nothing to do with speeding or wanting a truck for better gas mileage. The question of why Toyota would put a smaller motor for marginal to zilch improvement is valid. Again just pointing out the fallacy of better fuel economy here.

My stock 4x2 trd sport v6 can get over 27mpg on freeway at 65mph so long as it is relatively flat, if you have to go up and down hills and have lift, big tires tool box forget it.4wd system weighs a bit also.so long as you don't drive with a heavy foot it still gets a few mph more than the Gen 2 in most situations.

The 2016 gets better mileage ratings than previous models just not what you think is enough. The question is only valid if it is true. Unfortunately it isn't true so it is not valid. The engine gets better mileage than the previous one, just not the mileage you think it should get. Sell your truck and buy a Prius for your commute.

First link doesn't even define what slow is and gives no link to an actual study, mainly says a lot of people think they might have almost had an accident avoiding an undefined slow driver.

Second link also doesn't define slow and seems to be mostly about slow drivers in left lane. Also starts out saying slow drivers can be as dangerous as speeders. We know there are way more speeders then people driving the speed limit, let alone slower than speed limit.

3.5 liter Tacoma is the same as almost all vehicles in that none do better at 80 than 65.

Most interstate has minimum of 45 and many states have semi-trailer truck speeds 10-15 lower than cars.

Autobahn has many stretches of unlimited speed for cars with 120 kph (75 mph) for semi trucks. I've driven there, they have smaller shoulders than we do but more gradual turns but overall very similar road.

Do you own a 2016 or are you just defensive of the year model because you have one on order and have not driven or owned it yet? I have had one for 3 months.

Slow is defined as under the speed limit. Doesn't take a thermonuclear engineer to figure that out.

Did you miss the "Fuelly" info listed on my signature line? 2016 TRD Sports LB. Running 16" snow tires until mid March then back to 17" OEM shoes. Folks might believe some of the nonsense folks post on the net unless it is challenged. Your postings are illogical as was your purchase, if most of your driving involves a commute of any distance.

My commute is 1.8 miles to work each way. Most of my bulk mileage is highway driving on the weekends. The issue isn't what I bought the truck for...I have several vehicles anyhow. Toyota inferring that they have made some huge strides in efficiency with the 3.5L motor.... Well I guess if a 3% increase in fuel economy wins in your logic as a significant improvement I can't help you. I bought the truck and I don't have a problem pointing out its shortcomings (which are few). No need to get overly defensive because someone is pointing out the flaws in the vehicle. The Fuelly data collectively speaks for itself...new 2016 with 3.5L nets less than a 1 mpg improvement over the 2015 4.0L. Swing and a miss by Toyota there.

    it's not even 1mpg more.

Hell the 2011 and 2009 Tacoma's report better mileage than the 2016 on fuelly, so it is in no way an improvement in MPG. It's to bad they are advertising it as better MPG than the 2nd gen.

Keep in mind: a larger proportion of the 2016 fuelly miles are winter miles and 'lets see what this baby can do' miles.

My take is: 3.5 gets better low speed mileage and about the same high speed mileage (>65) than 4.0 (or 3.4).
