Maybe my logic is flawed here. But by sticking a smaller engine in a larger vehicle, how can you expect it to have better MPGs when it has to do more work than a larger engine?

You couldn't get a double cab 4x4 with a 2.7 period, let alone TRD.

Yea, or scour CL and people are always selling new takeoff parts. Tire/wheel packages, suspensions they replaced with lift parts.

I bet it's been covered already, but a 4 cyl 4x4 double cab Tacoma has never been made. Not in 01-04, not in 11-15, and not the 2016.

Stick to your guns OP, you don't wanna get stuck with the van motor 3.5L, I understand .

I'd rather buy the V6 and enjoy the power over ~200k miles than be slower than moped for 400k.

If OP really wants a 4-banger I'd suggest a Honda Element, CRV, or Rav-4banger.

I have no doubt a V6 can go over 400,000 with care, but the V4 just seems to run as long as any diesel. Stout trucks overall.

$2 gas is temporary if history repeats itself, not that there is too much difference in mileage between the 2 trucks like in previous years. But after owning 2 with the 4 cyl and 2 with 6 cyl, I prefer the 4. I had a Landcruiser with a v8. A tank, solid, but a gas hog.

Yes, but isn't the gearing also different? That accounts for much of the speed. Some posters have the 4 cylinder in the 3rd gen, and said it is sufficient. If rolling with big tires and you have an expectation of great speed, then the 4 seems slower.

Because the number of cylinders immediatey makes a difference on fuel mileage.

    How about a 401 cubic inch v6 compared to a 302 cubic inch v8?

I was looking even at the 3rd Gen, and that option did not exist. I was thinking of going to the factory in MS, and seeing if I could order one until on the website it stated you can order a factory truck, but thru a dealership only.

If you are basing your opinion on the word "V4" instead of "I4," maybe the credibility problem does not rest with me. I owned a Shop, no need to be a mechanic at the same time.
