I doubt they changed the whole canister. They likely sprayed it with brake clean which cleaned off your markings too.

Not true. They put the transmission into warm up mode with the laptop, then go underneath and remove the overflow plug.

I didn't know brake cleaner could remove sharpie. That is some pretty strong stuff. I marked it in a couple places and they all were gone. I don't think they would sit there, cover the whole canister in the stuff and then remove every little imperfection. It could be a possibility though.

Sharpie is strong, but brake clean is stronger. I have a stainless steel surface on top of my tool box, and I'll use a sharpie to write notes on it. I use brake clean at the end of the day to wipe it clean and everything I wrote is 100% gone. I technically only wipe it to dry it, the brake clean dissolves the sharpie immediately on contact, especially when it comes to smooth, non porous materials such as my work station or the canister for your oil filter. The sharpie marks just "lay" on the surface, they don't absorb.

Could it be they have a spare cartridge sitting around, ready to swap out for a faster oil change. That way the dirty one is cleaned up, before the next car comes for a pit stop.

I've never seen or heard of a dealership doing that. There's at least 3 different filter cartridge sizes, and they're like $30 a piece or more.

But anyway, who cares, the oil is changed and the engine didn't blow up. Another successful day

$30 apiece retail, do they have a guaranteed time to get you out the door?

48 posts on how to mark a filter to see if it was removed. Fuck my heads spinning.

lol nothing is guaranteed. Even if they say 30min or less or the next one is free, it's cheaper for them to just offer you an entire free oil change than to buy sets of filter canisters for each quick lube bay. That's $90 or more per bay. How long could it possibly take to clean and change the o rings on it, 10 seconds? Is it worth it for a service manager to spend hundreds on oil filter canisters to save 10 seconds per oil change?

This. The lube tech probably unscrewed the housing cap without draining the housing with the spigot first. It's faster but makes a bigger mess. After the filter is replaced, they should be checking for leaks, which requires saturating the area with brake cleaner to clean off all the old oil and dirt first.

We used to do that in the field, kind of a rough way to do it. Some vehicles check it the way I described just maybe not a taco truck.

Express maintenance never uses the spigot. I do. Gives me time to browse TW while its draining lol. I have an extra wide oil drain catch so I can drain the engine oil and the filter at the same time.

The techstream doesn't actually tell you oil level though, so if you want to know how much is in it, you have to pop the cork.

That's how we would calibrate the dipsticks on Cummins engines and Allison transmissions.

Maybe so, but Toyota does not use Allison transmissions, there are no electronic dipsticks that can be read via the laptop. You add fluid to the transmission, put it in warm up mode. Fluid has to hit 104-114 degrees, then you pop the plug out of the overflow tube, and when fluid slows to just a trickle, you're at optimal fluid level. That is the proper way, and pretty much the ONLY way to check fluid level, per the Toyota technical instructions.

Wonder what the retards were thinking of the way the filter sits on the engine? Let's have it sit upside down so the dirty hot oil will run down their tools, hand, and arm yea that's great! Instead of sitting it at a 90/45 degree angle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-eBtkwk1qI

He wasn't being considerate by cleaning it off for you. He was pissed at the people trying to catch him doing something dirty so he cleaned it off and didn't change your oil to say "FU".
That or he got it so cross threaded and bound up that he had to use a breaker bar to get it off and put on a new one because yours was so messed up. He had to chase the threads in your engine so the new one would thread in all the way. That's why it took 1 hour and 15 minutes to change your oil.
I'm just kidding. I'm sure it's fine. Just showing why some people prefer to do it themselves... too many clueless jackasses in the world. My sister had a Nissan Sentra that was a GREAT little car till she took it in for an oil change and put way too much oil in it. Never was right after that.

I totally agree. This is my first brand new vehicle. I've never taken anything to the dealer or had free oil changes available to me. I was just looking for advise. I look forward to changing my own oil hell I'm looking forward to not having to use a jack or ramps lol
