How about an after market set of Mup Flaps? Toyota wants $400.00 per set of 4.

Geat post! How about when you go up to a 285/70R/17 tire. Any ideas for getting the flaps to work. I didn't catch the first part of this, so I was just wondering what everyone else was doing concerning the lift. Anyho, someone mentioned that I could put them on ebay, I wonder what you can get for the 09 flaps? I'd rather run them, so I'll put them back on if I don't hear back and see where they rub and what mod I can try and post...Thanks

Good post. I used the tin-snip method also. I cut a little more off of mine perhaps 2 more inches. Turned out well. I have not final sanded them yet.

    Hey Gunny,
I posted my 2005 front flaps on eBay last week. Got $112.50 + $12 shipping. Everyone has a different preference. I had a lifted 98 XCab Tacoma 4x4 before and also took those flaps off (but didn't realize I could've sold 'em, so just threw 'em away). Since they are cheap (yet expensive), they look cheap to me. So I'd rather wax more often. To each his own!

    Hey jdtoothnail:

Thanks for the advice, your truck does have a great look to it without the flaps. Maybe I'll think on this awhile before I make a move. I reack'on I'll have to get used to Ebay some day, lol.

    Thanks again,

I noticed this problem on my '09 non TRD and was parked next to my friends '05 Sport TRD, yes he is just an inch or so lower but his front mud flaps had to have been at least 2 1/2" shorter. Guess they ran out of tape measures at the engineering dept. at Toyota???

may I suggest an even easier way ??
take them off, measure where you want them shortened to, cut them on a band saw or table saw, use the cut off piece as a pattern for the new lower edge, cut them and finish with a sander

I did my 09 Tacoma DC 4X4 this past weekend. I took them off and used a carpenter's coping saw and then some medium girt sandpaper to take off the burrs. Took 4" off the front and 5" of the back. I have the short bed.

They made different lengths different years/models. My 05 DC TRD Off-Road flaps were about 2.5" shorter than my buddies 07 DC TRD Sport. Just the front, the rears are still the same. I actually purchased a set from a newer prerunner because they redesigned them to not be so rigid and break (I had that problem with my rears). I got the longer ones which provide alot better protection from rocks and chips, so I'm kinda glad I got them.

Has anyone tried to switch the front ones to the back? Don't know if the mounting is different, but the back ones appear shorter? 4x4 trucks might look odd with the 4x4 in the front. I know the back sits taller than the front.

On the 4x4 or prerunners anyway, if you try swapping front to back the profile of the mud flap will not match the fender trimline of the truck. The mounting holes will not line up either.

I just took 5 inches off the front flaps with a pair scissors. Clean cut, no sanding.

now that everyone has had time to cruise around with their trimmed 'flaps ... does removing the raised edge when trimming cause the mudflap to break? my frear is that the 'flap becomes torn without the reinforcement

oh; and can the 4X4 white lettering be removed? i was going to try sanding or some type of solvent (goof off, acetone, nail polish remover)

    thanks

    See my build page!
Will trimming the flap like in this thread allow you to run 285.17.70 tires without rubbing or do the flaps need to be removed regardless?

I used the metal snips this morning on mine and it worked great!!! Thank you!!! It took about 10 minutes and that is just because I am a perfectionist.
