So, somehow my right front outer CV boot is destroyed. :(

I have a new one on the way from the dealership, but I wonder if it will be OK to drive to work tomorrow (short 3 mile drive). Will I cause any serious damage to the axle? A new one is $830 from the dealer and I'm pretty sure they won't warranty it since it was caused by me directly.

    Anyone?

    How did you destroy it?

Well, when I was putting everything back together, I could not for the life of me get the sway bar end link back into the spindle. So, because I was running out of daylight, i zip tied the end link to the spindle and drove about one mile home. Then, the truck sat until this morning and I drove it to the shop for alignment (about 2 miles). Apparently when I made a turn somewhere, that sway bar caught the CV boot on the right side and tore it all to hell. Good news is my dealer paid for a new one, so $0.00 out of my pocket and the shop will charge me one hour labor to pull the CV shaft and replace the boot. $72 later, live and learn. I thought it would be fine for the extremely small amount of driving I did but apparently not. Oh well, i will live.

Yup. Like I said, live and learn. So do you think driving six miles to work and back tomorrow will mess it up at all?

HOLD UP!! You spent $830 on what?! Or you're saying a new axle is that much and you don't want to destroy it before you put a new boot on I hope.

Throw a trash bag around the blown boot and duct tape it up. Temporary fix to keep contaminants out.

No no. I don't want to spend $830 but I'm afraid I will have to if the CV shaft gets ruined from driving six miles to/from work. The new boot is on order.

Like he said cover it up with a garbage bag and duct tape until it fixed.

I sure hope not. Saw that price and about fell outta my chair. You can buy TWO OEM axles SHIPPED for less than $750, LOL.

OP, you will be fine. Just wrap it up and stay out of the water. If its only 6-10 miles I wouldn't even bother wrapping it up if you're doing it in the next few days.

Still. I think I paid $24 CAN for a new boot kit from Napa. 1 hour later I was good to go.
Provided your boot isn't torn completely off and you did a month straight of sand dune running you'll be fine. Just be sure to clean your CV joint thoroughly with lots of brake cleaner and relube after it's dried.

    $830...good god.

Going to advise against that if its the outer boot. Real difficult to get under the birfield to put new grease in. Just wipe off the top and add more. (assuming you got the toyota boot kit) Gray/Blk grease goes on the outer, brown on the inner. )

Mine was the inner boot. I just loaded the boot with grease and then installed it.

You can go to town on the inner, just the outer since you cannot fully disassemble the joint. If you hit it with brake cleaner you'll never get the proper amount of grease back in the cage housing.

The outer boot is the one that's all tore up. My dealer ordered me the boot kit which is both boots and all the grease and what not for them. He said he would pay for it. We have purchased 4 Toyotas over the years from them so it's the least they could do for me being a dummy.

It will be in tomorrow and I'll go drop my truck off Thursday morning to be fixed.

Not to derail, but do you have a source? Thinking about replacing the CV axle when I do the ECGS bushing.

Camelback Toyota sells them for $345 apiece. At least, thats what I saw on their site.
